Owner description: Founded on September 1, 1772, this is considered one of the most beautiful missions in California and still serves as an active church in the community.

Right in the middle of town and a nice setting. There could be a lot more information about the area and the history, but since the missions are not part of the california park system there is limited funding and effort to make the visitor education complete.

I'm working my way through visiting all the California missions. This isn't the most impressive one I've seen so far. SLO is beautiful church in the middle of the city. The church is the main attraction as there is very little to see in the surrounding grounds. If you are in town, well worth a visit.

One of our favorite missions. Fully restored and functioning church. Well maintained and right in the heart of downtown, SLO. Fun place to visit.

1772 - one of the oldest European-settled communities on America's (USA) West Coast. Some twenty-some years before the Lewis & Clark exploration to the Pacific.

Worth a visit.

Initially we found the rear of the building where the bells are mounted above the garden, and the walkway covered with grapes on the vine, but the remainder seems to be working offices. It's not too well signposted from there to the front door, you go out into the street and follow the road around the block, perhaps much easier if you are coming out of town when it will be more obvious.

There's a large set of steps up to the main door, under the bells and date sign for 1772. You enter via gift shop, whilst no entrance fee, there's a request for a donation on entrance to the museum section. It contains a wide range of objects from both the religious aspect and also the farming background.

The area you can explore seems somewhat limited as the building is in daily use, it's perhaps more restricted than any of the other Missions I visited on this trip. However, it's certainly a good place to visit with an interesting history.
