This is not one of the big city well known missions but if you just want the mission experience, this is your place! If you have a child going into the 4th grade (or a couple of years away) and they go to school in California, this is a must see as you will be studying and or building a mission. Anyway, it's a cool place.

“Lovely and soothing”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Very historic and still a living and breathing church. Compared to other Mission churches, SLO mission is very sedate but dignified. I have been to other missions in California and most of them have elaborate altar settings, but actually the simpleness of the decor added to the solemnity of the church. It also has a unique "L" shaped set up, almost like half a nave. Don't forget to visit the museum. Interesting artifacts from the mission native (pottery, arrowheads) to the later Spanish, Anglo, and Chinese settlers. Interesting story about the black wedding dress, according to Spanish custom, a widow must wear black on her second wedding. Admission is at free will but I don't mind, because it support the maintenance of a place with such a rich history. The gift shop has some cute stuff fom Peru, like the 3 legged pigs and handcrafted creche figures (sure beat the made in China Costco Nativity scenes in sheer cuteness, and you also support the mission!).

“While not extensive, very lovely indeed”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

While not one of the bigger, extensive missions of California, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is right downtown, right next to the county historical museum, and art museum and delicious restaurants and fun shopping. It helps to bring the town into a historical perspective, which is uncommon in California cities. Lovely gardens, beautiful decorations in the church, and museum has some interesting historic photos of the area and people. Plus, it is still a functioning church.

“Beautiful Mission”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

Visited this mission while staying in San Luis Obispo last weekend for the first time. The mission is lovely and you can visit the church grounds, church interior, small museum and gift shop. The mission is well maintained and therefore in good shape. It does not take long to visit here, an hour or less depending on how long you want to linger at the exhibits. The mission is located near the downtown area of San Luis Obispo and therefore near shopping and restaurants. There is no cost to visit. I have always enjoyed seeing the California missions and learning about their history. I was glad to add this one to my list of missions seen as well.

“Beautiful church”

Historic site. Loved by the locals. Highly recommended if you have a chance attend a mass or concert in the Mission. Bells chime during weddings (almost every weekend during the summer).
