The big problem was the waiter. I said that I had to eat gluten free and he said does that mean no mayonnaise? Really! I expect in a nice restaurant that the servers should be knowledgeable. The food was fair, nothing outstanding.

“You get what you pay for!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013 via mobile

Great Mexican food! I had a combo plate with a shredded beef tostado and an enchilada. There was so much beef on the mini tostado and it was all so good. My husband had the taco and enchilada combo and said it was very good.

“Good tableside service; poor maitre d' and seating; poor food.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

The building and location are unbeatable, but if you're a stand-alone restaurant and not part of a chain, you'd better make sure your food is superb and your staff is well-trained in the art of hospitality.

Here, the food was poor. My salad (bleu cheese dressing) had a strange taste I can't put my finger on, except that it was slightly foul. My combination was a mess of inartfully prepared Cal-Mex food - chicken enchilada, shredded beef taco, and pork tamale. The tamale was ok, but neither the chicken nor the beef were (to my palate) marinaded or in any other way flavored. The chicken in particular was flavorless and bland. The taco was unimaginatively thrown together and largely flavorless - Taco Bell would have been an upgrade.

Then there was the service. Our waiter (medium height; Latino) was excellent: prompt, attentive, polite and accommodation. But that's where the hospitality ended. The two women (tallish; Anglo) functioning as maitre d's were completely disinterested in their jobs and lacked even the slightest clue about hospitality. No "welcome to our restaurant," no kind word on where we should wait to be called to our table, and the woman who sat us managed to walk with us from the front desk to our table, seat us, give us menus - WITHOUT SAYING A SINGLE WORD. Where on earth - outside of the old Soviet Union - would an attitude like this be accommodated. (If not for our excellent waiter, I'd have rated this a "terrible.")

With the traffic and publicity this place gets, poor service and bad food can't be about the money. Or perhaps it is. Tourist areas provide a captive audience - and you don't have to work that hard on quality.

“Best Albondigas Soup!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013 via mobile

We have visited this establishment numerous times. While it might look a little tired from the outside, you won't be disappointed with the food. Our favorite spot is on the sidewalk patio overlooking San Juan Capistrano and the Mission.
Albondigas soup is a personal thing for most people, but to my taste, this one is the best. Also try the Sonora chile verde pork burrito.
Great food, tasty margaritas and a historical setting in a quaint town. This is a winner!
