IT really is a special Mission.....free audio tour speakers you can use.. There were TOO MANY school field trips that day...so you may want to check before you go...go on line and print a 2 for 1 coupon.for admission ...THEN READ THE BACK OF THE TICKET WHEN YOU GO....we did not notice until we got home that there was a free appetizer at the restaurant printed on the back of the admission ticket...the restaurant is 1 block away....Vito's Italian Restaurant ...it we a great place for lunch...we ate there.....

I am from Boston and have visited a few others of the California missions. This was the best. There is a lot to see here and there has been significant restoration. I was most excited o se the old mission church which was significantly destroyed by the 1812 earthquake with much loss of life, the remainder of which has been preserved and stabilized for earthquake resistance. There are many unpaid volunteers serving the public here which indicates serious support by the local community. There is a new visitors center under construction which looks like it will be completed in 4 to 6 months.

There is a 2 for 1 coupon on the Mission website.

Having a beautiful sunny Sunday to explore I planned a day trip by train from San Diego aboard the Amtrak to visit the San Juan Capistrano Mission. As planned we departed at 9:30am and enjoyed the coastal scenery along the way...having experienced riding this route as a 10 year old,,I once again was exploring the adjoining cars and remembering the photos I took of the train as it would bend around the track...We arrived in San Juan Capistrano and it was absolutely gorgeous,,,a step back in time, the historic old train station was gorgeous.

We took a stroll through the old town area just west of the tracks and popped into some of the cute garden and niknak shops along the way...then walked a few blocks around the neighbor hood enjoying the old architecture of the Craftsman homes before heading back to enjoyable lunch at the Hummingbird Cafe.

After lunch a short walk to the mission. Entry was $9 for an adult and it came with a self guided waking tour audio device to explain the history of the mission. The grounds are beautiful with the ruins of the historical church. There are lots of photo opportunity locations to find within the mission walls and there seems to a few professional photographers who know this as well taking family portrait photos of their clients.

After our visit to the mission we headed over to the Swallows Inn for a cold drink and to listen to the live band inside. This is a stand up bar after the seast are taken with a small dance floor. The patrons are mature groups between late 40's to early 60's who frequent on the weekend.

After our relaxing time out of the sun we headed over to the Vintage Steak house, which is located next to the depot where we arrived and enjoyed dinner before heading back home on the 6:22 pm train back to San Diego...all in all a good day trip experience with a few suprises along the way and would recommend this for a couples day trip, a family day trip or solo if you just want to head out of town it is great.

after our tour

i've lived and worked here in San Juan for 10 years, and haven't returned to the Mission in all that time. Wow... it's all different! There are loads more exhibits, more interactive stuff and the new audio tour is the best I've ever heard! If you haven't gone in a few years, go back! Or wait a few more months until all the renovation up front is done, and they restore what was the gift shop back to its original uses... great family trip.

As a member, I like to come and sit in the gardens. Although school groups tour during the week, there are always places to sit and relax. The weekend events are always great.
