Posada de San Juan
Reviewed May 13, 2007

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Posada de San Juan last weekend and had a lovely time. After reading the two reviews on tripadvisor, we were hesitant, but found the Posada to be a charming inn. I agree that $108 is a bit steep; I wouldn't say that our stay was a terrific value, but I also wouldn't say that we were robbed.

The room was very clean and the tub was as wonderful as the previous review stated. The fireplace was a nice touch, but don't get too excited about relaxing before a romantic flame; it's gas, which means that it gives off a low-level purplish glow. A good but not great continental breakfast was included, which we didn't know about in advance, so that was a pleasant surprise. The staff were helpful and hospitable, but not obsequious, which was just fine by me, as I can't stand it when employees fall all over themselves in a phony way. The 4 pm check-in and the 11 am check-out is a bit unorthodox, but we arrived at 2 and they let us check-in early at no charge. They also let us keep our car in their parking lot after we checked out.

The true joy of this place is its location. San Juan Bautista is such a cute little town and we really appreciated staying right in the heart of it. From our room, we heard the roosters that roam the streets, saw the hills that surround the town (sort of), and almost smelled the enchiladas and chile rellenos cooking at the many Mexican restaurants around town.

In short: if you want and are expecting the Ritz, skip the Posada and the town it's in; if you want a relaxing getaway with small-town charm and some California history, this will do it!

At $115 per night, the Posada de San Juan is insultingly overpriced. It is worn, torn, dark and dirty. The 4:00 P.M. check-in time starts our stay as the first of several annoying features. A swarm of flies lives in the lobby, where the Costco-continental breakfast will be in the morning. All rooms face a central hallway on two tiers, like a prison cellblock. On 3/17/07, room 104 has no refrigerator, microwave, or coffee maker. It has no porch or balcony. The table and chairs are small and uncomfortable. The room has no decoration or wall hangings of any kind; it has no towel bars. The soap and shampoo are the cheapest available. The "in-room whirlpool spa" is spotted with mold and rust, and far too small to accommodate two people. There may have been a hanging lamp in the past, but now there is a bare metal plate covering a hole in the ceiling. The light bulbs in both bedside lamps are burned out.

The staff has no concept of service or hospitality, and ignores our request for light bulbs. We bed down and try to sleep, but at midnight the clock radio turns on at high volume. We are eager to leave. At 7:05 A.M. the front desk is dark and deserted. After many rings a cranky woman answers the phone, saying "We open at seven, but I'm here now."

The best part of our stay is the triumphant crowing of neighborhood roosters as we make our escape. I would rather sleep in my car than spend another night at the Posada de San Juan.

The Posada de San Juan is a charming hotel. Each room has a whirlpool tub armed with twin showerheads on opposite walls. Upstairs rooms have a nice balcony/patio that opens out from the room.

When we first checked in, we were given a room upstairs that had beds turned down, without pillowcases. The pillows smelled like body odor. There was a beer can on the patio wall that housekeeping had missed. When this was brought to attention to the front desk, the lady told us that the pillowcases were just washed and they just needed to iron them to get the wrinkles out for us. No apologies or warning that the room wasn’t ready when she first sent us forth. Then she asked if we would be going out (implying that would give them time to set the room straight). We requested another room and was given one. This one turned out to be completely unmade – garbage in the trash cans, beds all in disarray. We had arrived in the late afternoon, and given their relatively strict rule ($50+ minimum fine for check outs after 11am), there really was no excuse for the unmade rooms.

San Juan Bautista can get extremely hot; the environment is prime for insects. We had ants in the bathroom and woke up to ants in every open bag and piece of clothing. The caulking along the bathroom wall was also moldy.

The shower really was lovely and that would normally cancel out the ant problem in my mind. However, this hotel is not worth the $109 we were charged.
