Beautiful Historic Hotel

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 28, 2016
I had a peaceful stay at the Posada de San Juan in October 2016. The staff was kind, helpful, and efficient. The hotel is being remodeled but they made my stay and the stay of others very comfortable. My room was clean and quiet. Another benefit was that we could walk to the downtown area for food and shopping.

This is a family-owned charmer that offers an abundance of authentic hospitality and personalized attention that ranks this place as a 5-Star gem, in our opinion. Mary greeted me at the front desk and quickly established a first-name relationship which continued throughout the weekend. Eddie, the General Manager, is earnest, efficient and ready to go the extra mile for guests. Both are friendly, accommodating and honest! While the interior decor currently speaks of past decades and eras ... be patient... renovations and room upgrades are happening. In the meantime, the rooms are clean. The reception area is homey with comfortable couches and a fireplace. There is a hospitality room with refreshments and light fare available throughout the day. It is well-located in the heart of the downtown area. Everything you need is within a brief stroll: a nice coffee house, a great bakery, several restaurants, the Mission, and a series of mom and pop stores (like the rock shop) that are slowly going out of business in bigger towns and cities elsewhere. We have never stayed at a place in which we felt so immediately well-cared for and felt so appreciated for being guests of the hotel. We have stayed in high-end, well-appointed, big-name hotels but have felt "invisible" or like room occupants. At the Posada, we felt like guests, even extended family. Interior decor can always be upgraded but the authentic, inviting, gracious, appreciative, earnest hospitality is not easily replicated and it set the tone for a charming, enjoyable weekend. We will definitely return to the Posada and to San Juan Bautista for another weekend getaway from the bustle of the Bay Area.

Room tip: Some second floor rooms have balconies with views of the surrounding hills and renovations seemed to have started on that floor, too.

Hidden Jewel, GREAT PLACE TO STAY! Awesome staff can't wait to go back!! This was our first time staying at Posada De San Juan and it will be the first of many to come! We were BLOWN away by the staff and how friendly and accommodating they were for our stay. The staff and owners BENT OVER BACKWARDS making sure all of our needs were met and exceeded. I have lived in Silicon Valley my entire life and didn't know that this little gem was here. The hotel was extremely clean and well kept but it was the staff that made this place AMAZING and a treasure! We will definitely be back and will buy gift certificates for family this coming Christmas season. Thank you again Posada De San Juan for a fantastic getaway!

Room tip: 210 had a fireplace and a Jacuzzi Tub!! ooooohhhhh!

We've been visiting this for a few years now. LOVE the non-chain atmosphere. The lobby and stairwell is delightful with its Craftmanship wood work. Think California Mission styling. Especially like the stairway and railings on the upper floors plus the atrium effect as well.. One can see the love the original builder put into this hotel. Yes the place was a bit neglected in recent years BUT more energetic and enthusiastic family management team has recently taken control. Results: more friendly energy at front desk and they display an open communication with a strong desire to please and communicate. Room #212 was very clean and provided us with a great night's sleep after hiking in Pinnacles National Park all day. Another perk for us has always been the 2 shower heads working simultaneously...what a kick! Have also enjoyed the fireplace heater in the past which gives the room a very cozy feel when dozing off at night. Breakfast seems important to many people so will add that what was available on our recent visit is about the norm for many places. Don't expect a massive buffet: fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, pastry, coffee...you know the drill. I'm not a big breakfast fan personally so was just fine with what was there.
We really enjoy this hotel and are delighted that younger family members now have the overall voice in managing this hotel. No disrespect meant to the lady who ran this place alone on her insistence for many years but it was definitely time to make some changes. Honestly, the staff we've met seem really happy to take up the reins and add more professionalism and enjoyment to the task of running this delightful boutique style hotel. Looking forward to returning soon.

We visited the Posada with our Hiking Club. On the plus, the staff was friendly and the hotel is within a short walk to the Mission and fairly reasonably priced. The room was comfortable and clean. On the negative the ice machine was broken, the TV in the room very small and half of the channels were in Spanish. We reported a toilet in the men's room that was about to overflow. The desk person said they'd look into it but it ended up overflowing, sending water all the way to the lobby. Breakfast was somewhat disjointed. Would prefer coffee in the room.

Room tip: Our room was quite dark and looked out on a fence. No view.
