“FATHER SERRA WASN'T GOOFING OFF”

San Juan Bautista State Historic Park
Reviewed August 22, 2012

If you'd like to see one of the truly beautiful missions along Father Serra's route, make a stop here, and see it along with the surrounding town. The people are cordial, and helpful.

After the mission walking around the town square and looking at the various historic buildings and exhibits is also interesting. A tour of the hotel was rewarding. The entire ensemble is lovely and serene. The view over the valley is impressive. There is also a trail below along the valley. It's rare to see so many original buildings set together. The entire town in addition to the excellent mission is also well worth visiting.

The historical buildings include a former hotel, stable and carrige house, adobe houses, plaza and gardens. The quiet setting and nicely restored buildings give visitors a good idea of what the town must have looked like before the Gold Rush. You can walk around and enjoy the grounds but DO drop in the Park museum to view the artifacts AND pay the small fee to help maintain this early piece of California history. As a side note, the grounds were used for scenes in Hitchcock's film "Vertigo".

This place is awesome! There are multiple buildings so make sure to see them all. Read the exhibits too. The history is fascinating. The exhibits are well done. Only 3 dollars to get it. It's worth $10 in my opinion. Check out the mission across the street (separate admission) and also visit the main street in this little town, which is only a block away. Take your time, stroll, and enjoy. Feels like you're in the 1800s. History buffs will especially love this site.

Drove to San Juan Bautista on July 4th. Surprisingly quiet, between festivals. Easy drive from the Bay Area. Have visited the mission on previous visits but this time toured the Plaza Hotel and grounds, part of the State Historic Park. History of the early pioneers in the area. Hotel dining room, bar, and various rooms are just waiting for visitors of an earlier era. Very impressive and well done. The adjacent stable contains many horse-drawn carriages. Thoroughly enjoyed this outing.
