Hilton San Jose
Ranked #10 of 75 Hotels in San Jose

This hotel finally received a much-needed upgrade to all the rooms and public spaces. The results are impressive, appearing much more modern and high-end than you'd expect from a chain hotel.

The only negative aspect of our visit was unfortunately a huge error, which is the reason for only three stars - we were checked into a room that someone was already staying in with all their belongings spread throughout the room (fortunately, they were not present)!

While you should of course never leave valuables in your room, this experience made us particularly wary of the same thing happening to our room. Hopefully this is not a frequent occurrence!

I stayed at the Hilton for the night before running a marathon - hoping simply for a quiet night sleep. The room was below average. Everything was old and in real need of an upgrade but that wasn't the issue. The huge problem was that the walls were paper thin to the point where you wondered if anybody had bothered to test this when they were built. Somebody using the restroom next door sounded like they were in my room. Every slight rustle in the hallway echoed through the walls and into my room. It was shocking how loud it was. I realize I was sensitive to this because I was trying hard to get to sleep but I have never experienced anything like this.

As noted in the title, the staff is quite friendly and I almost gave this a two dot review because of them but "Terrible" is the only way to describe the night spent at this hotel.

Cons:
•Internet is an additional charge and no wireless option. The internet connection was also down without notification for several hours (front desk told me it would only be approx. 3 hours, total)
•Breakfast – the buffet was mediocre and the service appeared understaffed as they seemed encourage you to get the buffet. We had to ask for menu’s and every time they asked us if we had a coupon for the buffet which lead us to believe we were overpaying unnecessarily.
•Showers need help - Shower heads aren’t very high – I’m 6’-3” and always find it very annoying to have to duck. In addition, the drain didn’t work as I was standing in 2-3” of water. The lack of a working bathroom fan was also annoying, and the towels need replacement as they were very rough and occasionally had holes.
•Only one overheard light in the room, located in the entryway, provided little light to the room and required beside table lights to be turned on individually.

Minor:
•Not a big issue, but the giant TV console and CRT TV could be replaced with simply a wall mounted TV, which would free up a lot of space in the room.
•The bar and bar-scene at the Fairmont are vastly superior
•The roof deck pool at the Fairmont is significantly nicer.
•Lobby under construction (Aug 2008)

Pros:
•Quiet rooms (was on the 6th floor) at least until the water starts to flows at 6am.
•Pet friendly (although I didn’t utilize it on this trip)
•Late room service (midnight)
•Pretty good bar-food and beer selection (8 on tap, inc. some CA brews and Guinness)
•Comfortable bedding with numerous pillows and a good air conditioner. Crucial for any stay.
•A coworker badly sprained his ankle and the hotel was very considerate and provided him with a wheel chair and a lot of ice and empathy. The staff did a great job with this.

I visited San Jose last year and stayed at the Fairmont for several days, which is essentially located across the street. For both August trips I was traveling for business and believe we got a group rate discount. However, as of this posting, the #22 ranked Marriot’s average price is $209 while the #12 ranked Fairmont is $192. I thought the Fairmont was a much nicer stay (and if you’re attending a local conference such as SES, it’s where everyone congregates in the evenings). Had I not stayed at the Fairmont a year prior, I probably would have recommended the Hilton as a B-/B hotel but given these factors I see no reason to stay at the Marriot when the nicer - and less expensive - Fairmont is across the street.

Bottom line: The San Jose Fairmont is more hotel for less money.

Great location, public transportation right out the door( bus-light rail). room was very clean, and housekeeping did a great job all week. We were able to pick a two hour window of when we wanted our room cleaned( 8-10am, 10-12pm, ect.)
The Staff was very helpful, and friendly! Always there to answer any questions, and help with getting to places, the bus and light rail stops ect.
The only problem was the pool! I have never seen a pool so small for the size of this hotel! max. capacity 5 people., and about that many chairs too.
The are fixing up the lobby alittle- so it is not anything special, but i didnt need to spend any time in the lobby.

Although the staff were very good, we were disappointed in the hotel.

In particular, there was a large bedbug found in the morning in the middle of the bed. The hotel did not charge for the room, and did add a few points in the HH program, but we were disappointed to find that they did not offer to assist in all the laundry we had to do to clean all the clothing--and the suitcases--we had with us before we could go to our next destination.

We understand that bedbugs are a problem in the industry. But simply sending people on down the road with all their clothing and luggage infested is simply wrong as it just makes the problem grow. And it used up a day of our vacation to buy bug spray, find a laundromat, and so on so we could be sure we didn't spread the critters ourselves.

We were disappointed that Hilton didn't explain to use just how easily they do spread, the cost of getting rid of them if they get in your house, and what to do to clean up. Fortunately, a few minutes with Google and I found the information myself...

The hotel itself is getting ready for a very badly needed makeover/remodel.

Hotel had good location right next to convention center.
Even though we had non-smoking room, enough cigarette smoke came through ventilation system from other rooms to bother us most of the night.
Also the pool is TINY, its 3.5" deep and you can reach out and touch the edges on both sides, and Im only 5'6". Its only open from 10am to 10pm. Had to call the desk to get someone to open it at 10:10 in the morning.
This is prob. a good stay if your a smoker and plan on not being at the hotel very much.

This was a good stay.

Front staff was friendly and accomodating.

The room is a typical Hilton. Nice bedding, clean room. The TV is a smaller non-flat screen TV.

Room was very quiet.
