“excellent find”
Reviewed August 10, 2008

I stayed at this hotel for two nights with my boyfriend recently while visiting museums downtown and was very impressed with the overall experience. Before coming to San Jose I had previewed several other hotel options, most of them in the middle of town, and none of them were quite to my liking (or in my price range). When I stumbled across this hotel, I was excited to find that the price was reasonable and the amenities were many.

Our check in experience was quick and efficient; everything was ready to go and we were in our room in minutes. The room was clean, no spots on the floor and there were no unpleasant odors. I was dissappointed to find some crumbs near the microwave, but otherwise the kitchen and refridgerator were clean. We had a full compliment of silverware, dishes, glasses, knives, potholders, etc, which definitely came in handy. There was a television in both the living room and the bedroom, and also a dvd/vcr player in the living room. The walk in closet was very spacious and would have been very helpful to people staying for extended periods of time.

There were a few minor complaints we had, starting with the fact that there were no batteries in our remotes or our clock, and when I put some fresh ones in the remotes still didn't work. Also the bathroom door didn't close/lock all the way and the toilet paper dispenser was falling off the wall. The bathroom itself was located within the bedroom, so if there were guests using the fold out couch in the living room they would have to walk through there to get to it which might be an inconvenience for larger parties.

Overall I would highly recommend this place for anyone on business or leisure.

  • Liked — spacious room, full kitchen
  • Disliked — remotes didn't work, room needed minor repairs.

I was impressed by the good reviews here and anticipated a pleasant stay. Unfortunately, when we checked in at 4:00pm, we were told that the King room we'd reserved a month in advance wasn't available. We were "upgraded" to a 2 Queen suite, room 1923. The room we were given was supposedly nonsmoking, but clearly was not. It smelled terribly of stale cigarette smoke and mildew. When I informed the front desk staff, they said it was a nonsmoking room, but sometimes guests smoke anyway, and they couldn't help it. No other rooms were made available to us, and we were too tired from driving all day to look for another hotel.

Just outside our room was a sign on a post that said it was a designated smoking area, and listed all the dangers of cigarette smoke. The non-smoking sign on our door looked like it had been recently stuck on (it wasn't in the same location as non-smoking signs we saw on the doors of other rooms in other buildings) so I think the room had been recently "converted" to non-smoking, but had not been aired out, repainted, or throughly cleaned.

The room itself, other than reeking of stale cigarette smoke and mildew, was decent in size and layout. The furniture was roughed up a bit, the decor mid-80's style, but the maids had done a good job cleaning. The sink, tub, toilet, and kitchenette were spotless.

We enjoyed the pool and hot tub, which was clean and well maintained.

The buffet breakfast was generous and featured scrambled eggs, sausage, cereals, fruit, yogurt, make-your-own waffles, and an assortment of juice and coffee. Staff buzzed about cleaning tables quickly and restocking food on the buffet.

Most impressive was the staff at this hotel. Every staff person we passed, from the guy wiping down exercise equipment in the well stocked fitness room, to the maid who gave us extra towels, to the front desk person who printed out our airline boarding passes and recommended a restaurant for dinner, was wonderful. They all had a smile and seemed sincerely happy to assist us.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you are sensitive to mold and cigarette smoke (we have allergies, so it was miserable for us), but I must give high praise to the staff. If you are lucky enough to get a truly nonsmoking room, hopefully you'll have the great experience we had hoped for.

  • Liked — The staff seemed sincerely happy to help us, had a postive attitude
  • Disliked — Our nonsmoking room was not available -- we had to stay in a smoking room that stank.

Had a very enjoyable stay at the hotel. We traveled with 2 teenagers and an infant. The 2 bedroom suite worked out perfectly. Full kitchen and living room was very convenient. Staff was friendly and helpful. Excellent laundry facilities (3 washers 5 dryers) and free.

At check in, we were told we'd been upgraded to a two-bedroom suite, our first ever, and we're spoiled now!

Although we only used one of the bedrooms, it was wonderful to have our own bathrooms; just like home. The kitchen was thoughtfully stocked with all the essentials like coffee, cups and glasses, a can opener, cutting board, dish towels, etc.. The beds were comfortable and the linens were crisp. The pillows were soft and squishy -- just like home, again. The towels were white and fluffy, and with two bathrooms, there were plenty of them. The hotel was quiet, although there is a 24-hour casino just across the street, we had to ask what it was because there was no traffic or other noise. This hotel is extremely convenient to the airport. The manager, and in fact all of the staff, really went out of their way to welcome us and make us feel special, but I'm saving the best part for last -- BREAKFAST! At most places, you get a muffin, a banana, some cold cereal, a bagel, maybe a waffle if you're lucky, and coffee. This place had all that, plus a fresh fruit and cottage cheese bar, hot oatmeal, corned beef hash, hard boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, make-your-own breakfast tacos with cheese and jalapenos -- plus other things I've forgotten. For the early risers, they pack a "to-go" breakfast bag that has all the essentials. The cranberry juice is 4 oz., though, so you'd better drink it in route to the airport or risk having it "confiscated." And on two or three nights of the week, they have "snacks" in the dining area. We missed BBQ night, which is Wednesday, I think. The front desk clerk will happily give you the schedule. Another convenience -- the office is open 24 hours a day for guests, so if your flight leaves at 5:30 A.M., you can check out and grab a "to-go" breakfast and be at the airport in minutes. After our first sweet suite stay, we'll choose Staybridge San Jose for future visite.

I was recently at Staybridge for 4 nights. I had a 1 bedroom suite. I thought it was good - slept pretty well. Wasn't too noisy (the freeway is nearby). Casino across the street if you are so inclined. I didn't try the pool (but should have). Lots of little extras I wasn't expecting (breakfast, laundry, luggage tags).
My only real problem is that I had a lot of trouble using Skype on my laptop when trying to call home... not sure what the issue was - network throughput or something (too many dropped packets)... didn't seem to matter if it was wired or wireless... really a bit of a minor detail.

Our family stayed at the Staybridge Suites April 11-13. We booked the hotel based on previous reviews, having never been to San Jose or at a Staybridge before. We were not disappointed!

From check in to check out, the staff was nothing but friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We had a 2 bedroom suite, which was very clean and comfortable. Both rooms were separated from each other with their own bathroom. (Perfect when traveling with 2 teenage girls). The equipped kitchenette was a plus since we ended up using it the 2nd evening.

The hotel grounds are well kept and the complimentary breakfast was excellent. We took advantage of the free wireless internet and had no problem accessing it.

The hotel is nicely situated for easy access to several freeways.

We will definitely stay at the Staybridge Suites San Jose again.
