“Great potential but check your invoice (and your minibar)”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2014

Good business hotel with central location. Attentive valet service.

However, a (minor) unpleasant surprise happened days after check out when I was checking my CC account: A candy bar was billed to my CC on the very last day. In principle, I don't touch minibars in hotels. Because it was just about 3$ I didn't ask for a reimbursement. But keep an eye on that minibar.

Rooms are really nice here and comfortable, but downtown San Jose is just so, so. For business, it is lacking irons and ironing boards in the room, and the parking is always for a fee and fairly expensive. The city of San Jose is not helping the downtown area because of the expensive parking, and by not allowing overnight parking on the street, plus the streets are dangerous late at night.

If you are looking for a very convenient place to stay while attending an event at the SAP Center, this is a good choice. When we arrived at the hotel we were delighted to find that there was valet parking directly in front of the lobby, and it was most convenient. And...there was a nice young man that delivered our luggage to the room for us. All in all, I would recommend this hotel. The people were very nice and helpful, the location is great...a very safe and short (about 8 minutes) walk from the SAP Center. We will absolutely stay there again the next time we go to the Center for a concert. Even though we tried to get dinner reservation the night of the concert more than a week before the event, the restaurant was completely booked. So...get your dinner reservation well in advance of your arrival or you will have to settle for room service, or another resturant in the area.
I was amazed to discover that there was not a coffee maker in the room...even very low price motels have coffee makers these days. However, room service took only 20 minutes. We ordered breakfast the morning after the concert and it was delivered as promised within the 15-20 minute time frame. However, the food was cold when it arrived, and we discovered (after the room service guy departed), that there were no knives, forks or spoons. These were brought up pretty quickly, but the food was already cold anyway. I was also surprised to discover that there was no fan of any kind in the bathroom.

After our concert we were very grateful for the "raid our pantry" service, located on the second floor, and available from 10:00pm until 5:00am. The little room was packed with people standing in line, but it was a friendly crowd, and the line moved quickly. When I arrived at the area where the pre-wrapped sandwiches were kept, there were only two left. I was about to feel disappointed when an employee arrived with a huge platter loaded with fresh sandwiches, and the selection and quality was very nice....especially at midnight, and at no cost to hotel guests. In addition to several sandwich choices, there was fruit, several kinds of cookies, coffee, etc.

Staying at this hotel is so much better than fighting the traffic and craziness after a concert, at least it was for us. We will look forward to staying there again the next time we are headed to San Jose for an event at the SAP Center.

Room Tip: We were given a corner room, and it was very nice to have cross ventilation. The windows open and th...

This is a beautiful hotel from the 1930s that has been stylishly refurbished. It is a great location for attending programs at SAP. You can walk to dinner, go to the SAP event and stroll back. They have great package deals too, so check their web site. We found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful. Would definitely recommend and plan to stay there again.

Room Tip: 908 was on the front street side, but quiet and nice

We stayed here for one night after a concert at the SAP center. It worked out perfectly. SAP center is a short walk and lots of other people walking to the concert makes it feel safe.

Hotel was nice enough for this purpose. I was a little worried about street noise being on the third floor but it was not bad. We were both able to sleep through the night. Our room was neat and clean with windows on to the street in 306.

One negative was the pillows - overstuffed. Oh, and if you don't see them on your bed, they are in the closet. And if you think the closet is locked, it's not. Just pull the handle :)

We were thankful for the "raid our pantry" option. We were starving after the concert.

I would stay here again when going to a concert. If staying in San Jose for any other reason, I would stay at Hotel Valencia on Santana Row - that is more my style.

We ate at Los Gatos Brewing co pre-show. Good spot!

Stopped by the Hedley Club Lounge Saturday after the Sharks Game. What a fabulous surprise! a great combo playing old school smooth jazz. A relaxing venue by the fireplace with pleasant surroundings and comfortable accommodations. A real winner in downtown San Jose. Best cocktail lounge in the area. Beats the noise and crowds at the nearby venues.

The hotel is without question gorgeous, from the elevator doors to the bathroom wallpaper. It's also surface clean, with towels and linens in good shape. Where it falls down and falls down hard is with the service and amenities.

Hubby and I booked a room for a romantic night away together just a few days ago and we had reasonably high expectations that the price would come with a commensurate level of service. Boy were we disappointed. The woman who checked us in, (Linda I think?) consistently showed so little enthusiasm for her job that I would not be surprised if she were actually being held hostage and forced to work off a debt. She was incredibly forceful about pointing out the hold the hotel places on the debit card, checking at least three times that we understood they were going to hold a $100 deposit. I guess hubby and I looked poor! No smiles, no thank yous, when she told us the rate for the room she couldn't even manage a full sentence.

"Hi, we'd like to check in if you have a room available for tonight?"
"$215"

We chalked it up as a fluke, even good customer service professionals have off days, but on check out her surliness was completely unchanged. Apparently the front desk here is staffed by grump cat. :-D

The overwhelming majority of the staff shared her lackluster approach to their jobs, but the front desk experience stands out. Oh, we asked about parking and were told it was valet only at $24 a night. We asked if she knew the cost of the garage down the street, of course she didn't. We asked if the valet cost was billed to the room and were told it was. When we dropped the car off at the valet not five minutes later he asked if we prepaid for parking, which we had not. Turns out, if you prepaid at the front desk it's $22 instead of $24. Nice. At no point did we feel like we were welcome or anyone was anything other than indifferent to our presence.

There was a TV in the bathroom for bathtub viewing awesomeness-unfortunately someone had ripped the cable out of the back. Since we were given the stinkeye on check-in we informed the hotel immediately and they were prompt about sending someone up to fix it. The TV hutch/mini bar had sustained some serious damage to the lock, cutting the vibe in the room down to a little more Creep Inn than Classy Joint. *sigh* Since Maintenance was in the room when we discovered the damage to the TV hutch we pointed that out (to avoid having Grumpy Cat bill us for it!). Apparently it had been that damaged for a while.

I was looking forward to grabbing a midnight snack from their 'Raid our Pantry' program rather than brave the unusual San Jose cold for a late night bite. Yikes. I really love the idea, but the implementation was just sad. Unripe bananas, squishy apples, and what really looked like Costco cookies. I went to fix a sandwich and was baffled to find three types of bread and no toaster. The pantry area is small, since it is an adorable older building, but really? No room for a toaster? Someone did come in to swap out the half empty plastic wrapped plate of deli meat and cheese, helpfully labeled with a date from three days ago, but hubby was so sketched out by the inadequate refrigeration and lack of serving utensils that he would not touch it. They took the half empty cookie tray away (to refill?) and did not bring it back. Bottom line, I've seen cleaner and nicer setups at the Days Inn.

There is a DVD library you can borrow movies from, which was lovely. The remote for the DVD player did not work, which was pretty much par for the course.

To top it off, we accidentally left a hat behind in the room. I called as soon as we realized, 8 hours later. The hat was not turned in to Lost and Found, which I didn't really expect. But I did ask for a callback as soon as the Lost and Found was checked, which I was told would be in half an hour or less. To my complete lack of surprise I did not get a call back and had to call myself an hour later.

The De Anza is a truly beautiful property, and a historic one. But for the money I'd rather stay at the Sainte Claire, Montgomery or Fairmont. A four star hotel is just about the experience, and this experience was really not good.
