Owner description: The City National Civic is managed and operated by San Jose Theaters, a division of Team San Jose. Built in 1936, it is a Spanish Mission style dual-level venue that hosts a variety of events including concerts from major touring artists, as well as a variety of other events (e.g. big-name comedians, sporting events, business conferences). The Who kicked off their first headlining tour of the U.S. here in 1968. This historic venue has also hosted The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand and many more. the remodel ruined the venue. where else can we now go for amateur boxing, roller derby exhibitions, local " talent " shows, etc. the local community is now priced out of utilizing the site. there was a time when the place was for the local community, creaky wooden floors and all..

This event center is great. We have attended a number of events here and the last 2 years we have seen these 2 groups and loved everything. The venue is a great place to see many events, especially a concert. The staff were all friendly, professional and the prices for food aren't bad either. This smaller, more cozy venue makes for a great couples outing. This is a place I feel very safe and welcomed at. We will attend events here again for sure.

Was here in October to see e Snow Patrol concert. The venue was nowhere near sold out so it was comfortable to stand with the crowd and enjoy the show. The acoustics were pretty good and the actual building itself is quite nice. The drinks were very pricey so pre-load if that is your thing. All in all an interesting place to catch a show.

I would give the Dukes an “A” for effort but for things out of their control the overall concert garners a “C.”

First, they should have played a different venue as the San Jose Civic Auditorium is nothing more than an oversized gymnasium. Perhaps, this was a great venue during earlier times but it just does not compare to today’s music venues. The place has great curb appeal but the inside leaves a lot to be desired: the chairs are old, the place lacks charm, the concession stands are outdated, the wines are horrible and most importantly the acoustics are absolutely horrible and even Donald Fagen’s musicians could not overcome it.

With respect to the performance, let’s face it, Donald Fagen and his musicians will always dominate a performance because of his many Steely Dan and solo hits. To this end, I would suggest (and who am I to suggest anything to Donald Fagen) that during future performances Donald sing his solo and Steely Dan hits and his co-performers sing their hits. Although it is admirable to sing songs from performers that they grew up with it didn’t work and frustrates the audience that long to hear hit material.

If you like small venues to see upcoming or past bands, this is the place. I saw so many shows in the 80's through today there, including Rick Derringer, Huey Lewis, Edgar Winter, Pat Benetar, and so many more. Great place with convenient parking and restaurants nearby.
