We dined with friends and none of us were very familiar with many Vietnamese dishes. The waiter was very helpful in helping us choose dishes that we could share and taste. The shrimp cupcakes are the star appetizer. All of the dishes we had were very tasty - fish, pork and seafood. The fish did come whole and we had to debone it ourselves. Perhaps if we requested, they would have done it for us. The service was good and they were eager to please. Despite what other reviewers have said, we did not find this restaurant too pricey for what we received. Will definitely visit this restaurant again.

We are definitely not connoisseurs of Vietnamese cuisine so all we can say is the food was very good. The restaurant was clean and the service was helpful and attentive. The only drawback we encountered were two people ordered meals that came with noodle bowls (?) -- the white noodles were bland and numerous but maybe that is standard with this cuisine. We would have preferred to have more vegetables and fish with less noodles. I had fried noodles with vegetables and it was delicious all the way around.

Vung Tau is inside an old 50's style diner near downtown San Jose. The decor of the restaurant inside is nicely done and transforms the diner into an Asian restaurant. The outside of the restaurant is a different story. This part of San Jose isn't the best.
The food makes all the difference though. The menu offers a large selection of Rice, Noodle and Soup dishes. We went there for lunch and they had a good business going.

If you have ever eaten at Vung Tau, chances are you had gotten there by car. The location offers little, if any at all foot traffic. Yet the place has more reviews than most Vietnamese restaurants in the 50 mile radius. And they get it done the old-fashioned way: by making great food without cutting corners.

Flavor and freshness with a small nice touch in every one of our 4 dishes. The thick and juicy spring rolls got a light layer of starch (I'm guessing) for a very pleasant flaky+crispy texture. The Pork-and-shrimp wonton soup (aside from homemade pork+shrimp wontons AND BOTH tender slices of pork and carefully cleaned shrimp) had the most amazing broth I had in a while. Those precise qualities appear to be characteristic enough for the rest of the dishes that traveled past our table.
Service was nice initially, complete with a good, unsolicited advice, but went downhill from there as we sat with empty water glasses.
Expect to pay about 20-25% over the "average" (very low as is) Vietnamese food prices. A more than fair deal for 3X the flavor and freshness one could expect.

We had dinner at Vung Tau 2 restaurant on Sunday Sep 4, 2011. Overall, the food was OK and pricey (we live in Orange County, CA, so this may bias our judgement). The service was fast. The restaurant was clean. People were nice and funny; they tried to make their customers happy.
