There are two locations, this one near Japantown (open for lunch), and another on Bascom just south of the Pruneyard (open for lunch and dinner).
The atmosphere is simple, perhaps even underwhelming, and you may wonder what you're getting yourself into. The service, too, while fine enough and very friendly, will not knock your socks off. But the food? It's just plain good.
Cambodian, as you might imagine, is like Thai and Vietnamese, but with its own unique wrinkles. If you're a meat eater, definitely order the yellow chicken curry. Similar to Thai yellow curry, but far better than any Thai or Singaporean curry I've ever had. It has perfectly stewed carrots, potatoes and falling apart chicken thighs in a slightly sweet, fragrant yellow coconut curry. Awesome! Also try the stir-fried rice noodles in tamarind sauce (similar to pad thai, but oh so Cambodian).
We've introduced many of our friends to Chez Sovan and everyone loves the food. Next time you have a hankerin' for Krung Thai or Straits Cafe, switch it up and head over to chef Sovan Bounthui's place. Your date may not be impressed, but your taste buds will thank you.
