The San Francisco bay area is blessed with a large and vibrant Indian community. That makes us all rather spoiled when it comes to good Indian restaurants. It's hard to review it without comparing it to many others. So in that context, I'll call Saffron Bistro "Average" instead of "Very Good".
Went to Saffron for the buffet on Tuesday evening. There was lots of variety, with several vegetarian dishes, some chicken dishes, and a nice lamb curry. I sampled pretty much everything that was available, and it was all very tasty. One small disappointment was that what looked to be Saag Paneer was all saag (spinach) and no paneer (cheese). For dessert, there was a very nicely flavored mango custard with strawberries, although it was marred by a layer of what looked like soggy saltine crackers. There was also some disappointingly watery rice pudding.
Service was very good. The dining room is nicely decorated. The nice ambiance suffered, however, due a rather large number of fruit flies circling our table.
