The San Francisco bay area is blessed with a large and vibrant Indian community. That makes us all rather spoiled when it comes to good Indian restaurants. It's hard to review it without comparing it to many others. So in that context, I'll call Saffron Bistro "Average" instead of "Very Good".

Went to Saffron for the buffet on Tuesday evening. There was lots of variety, with several vegetarian dishes, some chicken dishes, and a nice lamb curry. I sampled pretty much everything that was available, and it was all very tasty. One small disappointment was that what looked to be Saag Paneer was all saag (spinach) and no paneer (cheese). For dessert, there was a very nicely flavored mango custard with strawberries, although it was marred by a layer of what looked like soggy saltine crackers. There was also some disappointingly watery rice pudding.

Service was very good. The dining room is nicely decorated. The nice ambiance suffered, however, due a rather large number of fruit flies circling our table.

Not your ordinary Indian cuisine which is why Saffron is so popular. Each visit finds new treasures until the menu is exhausted. Nice buffet as well. Highly recommended!

My family and I decided to have some Indian food. We had eaten at Saffron previously and the food was always good. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived that there was a Sunday buffet. The buffet had more vegetarian than non-vegetarian options. The chicken tikka was only legs but tasted OK. I liked the butter chicken, however, I did find some gristle in the meat. It was very crowded when we arrived around 6:00PM but it quickly thinned out within 30 minutes or so. The service was slow and it took our waiter a while to bring our naan bread. I would say the food was fine but not as good as when we had ordered off the menu. Sometimes that is the case when eating from a buffet, as quality is sometimes compromised.
