Laurel Inn & Conference Center

I was delighted with this little motel. It was clean and accessible, the pool was great and the diner beside it called the Black Bear served really good food. The hotel is a little noisy as it is right by the motorway but otherwise no problems. I would definitely recommend this motel if you are coming to Salinas.

My wife being from Salinas recommended the Laurel Inn. Not bad for the price at govenment rate. The location is convinent (just the other side of the freeway from the Residence Inn). Easy access throughout Salinas.
Our room was on the second level facing Hwy 101 offramp. To our surprise the room was relatively quiet with the exception of morning cars starting up to leave and one unconsiderate truck owner who had his truck warming up for five minutes before leaving. What an A..hole.
The room (224)is a no frills large room and clean. Nice tv set with remote, small closet just enough for three, no iron and board, not enough draws, plenty of electrical outlets for recharging batteries, and has wireless internet connection with our Centrino. Did not have any problem connecting.
My daughter, discover crumbs on the sheets after she had rolled the bedcover. The sheets appear to look clean and changed. No bed bugs, but found some ants in the sunken shower tub. After the first shower, they were never seen again.
The bathroom was o.k. with four set of towels for guest. Plenty of light from both the ceiling and the clearstory in the bathroom.
The Black Bear rest. was fine spite of what the previous reviewer noted. Don't get me wrong, I don't like greasy food too, it makes me ill. No complaints from us. I had the omlette with hash bround and English muffin and it was great and not greasy. Same with my wife's eggs over easy with pancakes. She love them too. My daughter had the Belgian Waffle with Strawberries and cream and she loved it. It is a fast service diner with friendly hostesses. This is not the Mark Hopkins, so take it for what its worth. We'll eat there again considering Salinas doesn't have much to offer. We return there for lunch the next day and I had their famous chicken fried steak and loved it. The locals said this is the only place they would eat chicken fired steak. I think they're right.
In conclusion, for the price we had paid, we'll stay there again. The staff at the desk were very cordial and friendly. Oh yes, don't forget the free USA daily paper offered at the counter.

I've stayed at the Laurel Inn many times over the past five years. I choose it because I can count on a clean, well functioning, non-depressing room at a reasonble price. This is a low-frills motel. There's no high speed internet in the rooms, but the local calls are free and I could check my e-mail by dial-up. There is no bell staff, but there is ample parking in front of the rooms. This visit was no different than any previous visit. I got a nice, clean room with a king size bed. The staff was professional and helpful. When I checked in I was given the corporate rate and a late checkout. The maids are very good and the one who made up my room left me a note thanking me for the tip. It's also close -- I don't know what the other reviewer was talking about -- to a large mall with many stores and food options located just across the freeway. The adjacent Black Bear diner is definitely a greasy spoon -- though it's quite popular with the locals. One can eat better by first spending three or four minutes in the car.
A few years ago, this was the only place I'd consider staying at in Salinas. Since then, a Residence Inn and I believe a Courtyard have opened. I'm sure that these new hotels are just fine, but they are also 50-100% more expensive. If you don't need fancy, but don't want depressing/dirty (or dangerous, like the Motel 6 at Kern St. -- drug deals, hookers, cops driving by frequently to clear out the parking lot in the back, and doors opening and closing every few minutes all through the night -- I'll never stay there again!), then try the Laurel Inn. I will continue to stay at the Laurel Inn every time I have business in Salinas.

I booked from the UK by email. Most efficient, accommodating my last minute changes with no problems. Stayed 3, then 2 nights. Would definitely stay again.

Good-sized rooms, air-con, TV, bathroom and separate 'kitchenette' with fridge. Although full over a weekend with a car-racing crowd, not at all noisy.

Friendly and helpful staff.

Poor evening meal from neighbouring diner ('Black Bear'), but can wholeheartedly recommend unpretentious Vietnamese restaurant ('Noodle House') in mall over Highway 101, just around corner and west on Davies.

I have stayed at the Laurel Inn 4 or 5 times over the past 3 years, and my wife twice, in separate visits to my elderly mother, who lives in Salinas. I will stay there again next week. Visits have ranged from 3 days to just under 3 weeks. We have had zero problems - the rooms were always clean, beds comfortable, the staff responsive and helpful, rates reasonable. The Black Bear restaurant on the premises serves good food in huge portions.

Cons? The rooms are standard/boring, and the neighborhood is residential on one side with a freeway on the other - except for a nearby convenience store and wash house, the nearest store is about a mile away. However, the freeway noise does not intrude into the rooms, and the freeway provides quick access to most parts of town.

I have stayed in other, supposedly comparable motels in Salinas and also, despite an extensive review of the local hostels, have not been able to find anything in the same price range that is any improvement on the Laurel Inn; most not nearly as good.

I've stayed at the Laurel Inn Motel/Hotel many times. The rooms are always clean. Rooms are also large for a motel. A few rooms have fireplaces that are very nice. Black Bear Diner is attached, they have excellent "comfort foods" (try the chicken fried steak, it's HUGE). Family has also stayed here. It's a comfortable motel in a, pretty much, residential area of Salinas. Major shopping centers nearby, Old Town Salinas less than 10 minutes away.
