“Great place for lunch, even if a 30 mile round trip to have lunch.”

“Great place for lunch, even if a 30 mile round trip to have lunch.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2012

Very nice, informative staff. Lovely lunch and all 3 of us enjoyed our various meals, including cobb salad, chicken/veggie wrap and chicken/mushroom crepe. (This was enjoyed by a man who generally avoids mushrooms at all cost - which is saying it really was great, even with fresh mushrooms.) The tomato soup was wonderful as was the Brandy Alexander pie my husband had and I got a bite.

Approx. $12 for meal and soup or sandwich and soup or salad. Reasonably priced.

Nice tour of the place, and gift shop with very reasonably priced items. Other reviews also describe this place well. Only my husband, upon leaving, noted the gang activity outside- hope the town fathers do something about that.

“Charm, gracious service, fabulous food & reasonable prices”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2011

The draw is author John Steinbeck's charming Victorian birthplace. The service by members of the ladies' auxiliary makes one feel welcome. The excellent food urges one to dawdle. The fun shop in the basement is what finally propels you out!

“So Glad we went here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2011

2 blocks from Steinbeck museum (itself very worth visiting) and a lovely lunch in the restored house he grew up in - really good, reasonable light lunch - I cant imagine not eating there if you are a Steinbeck fan..worth visiting from Monterey/Carmel region.

“this would be a good restaurant anywhere but considering where it is it's amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2011

We had a really beautiful 3 course meal here, with lots of produce that we were assured was locally sourced. The service was by some wonderful older ladies who were enthusiastic Steinbeck fans and and amazingly accommodating in showing us the house after the meal was finished. I could not find fault with this establishment even if I tried and when I got home and saw what the bill actually cost me in my currency I just couldn't believe it. I don't understand why all this as citizens of Salinas are not just coming here for a wonderful lunch let alone if you're a fan of John Steinbeck.

“Reasonable and good plus atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2009

Steinbeck's house has been converted to a nice luncheon restaurant staffed by volunteers. Service is nice and homey - food is excellent - atmosphere is like eating in a Victorian parlor. Very reasonable prices for excellent food served with a slice of history.
