We had a really beautiful 3 course meal here, with lots of produce that we were assured was locally sourced. The service was by some wonderful older ladies who were enthusiastic Steinbeck fans and and amazingly accommodating in showing us the house after the meal was finished. I could not find fault with this establishment even if I tried and when I got home and saw what the bill actually cost me in my currency I just couldn't believe it. I don't understand why all this as citizens of Salinas are not just coming here for a wonderful lunch let alone if you're a fan of John Steinbeck.

Steinbeck's house has been converted to a nice luncheon restaurant staffed by volunteers. Service is nice and homey - food is excellent - atmosphere is like eating in a Victorian parlor. Very reasonable prices for excellent food served with a slice of history.

We went just to tour Steinbeck's home and discovered they served lunch. How amazing is that?! The atmosphere is just amazing. The ladies who serve lunch are so charming and the food, while simple, was great.

This is definitely something for someone who are tired of going to tourists spots, and for those who love to find out about local history and culture. Following the previous reviewer's advice, we booked our lunch at the Steinbeck House yesterday.

Food was good; $12.75 for entree and soup/salad. They change the menu every week, call to get info. They prefer to get RSVPs in advance. Lunch from 11:30 to 2 pm and beginnning 9/13/08, they will also serve afternoon ($20/head) from 1 to 3 pm. Only open Tue to Fri. There's no admission fee to the Steinbeck house.

It's a very elaborate Victorian house, though it was not the condition of the time when the Steinbeck family used to live there. It's completely run by volunteers (the Valley Guild I believe). It was a thrill to see all the enthusiastic elderly ladies so very dedicated to inform and to serve all the guests. Some were old family friends of the Steinbecks. I recommend any visitor to go here for lunch, then hit the Steinbeck Center a few blocks away.

The Steinbeck House in Salinas, California is the birthplace of author, John Steinbeck. With an all volunteer staff, the Steinbeck House is a great place for lunch. In fact, they are only open for lunch. Located just off the historical downtown district in Salinas, the Steinbeck House is a beutiful Victorian home. The Steinbeck House features a prix fixe menu that changes weekly. Their full menu can be found at the website at [--]. Prices are moderate and reservations are recommended
