Good food at a great price. The dining room is a little odd -- kind of figure-eight shaped. I had the chicken fajitas, and a friend had the chicken enchiladas. Not bad at all. Very tasty, and worthy of a second visit.

Pica's has a great menu. It is NOT your run-of-the-mill taqueria. Plan on spending some time to really check out the menu. The downside (for me) is that none of the tortillas are made in house. Other than that, I highly recommend Pica's. Service is great, the cooks are awesome.

Sheesh, just writing this gets me thinking about going there very soon.

My companion and I were on the way to a concert and planned to go to the brewery in what is called "Old Town Salinas" before the show. It turned out the brewery was closed so we gladly stepped into the Mexican place next door.

There are several parking areas (municipal and 90-minute) around the block, and it is right next door to a movie theater and two blocks from the Steinbeck Center.

The interior is properly illuminated so you can read the menu and see the food. The brown stone walls are beautiful. The drink list is on the short side, but the food items are well thought out and listed so it's easy to understand what they are serving.

The menu covers from the tacos and burritos a la cart (taqueria prices) to dinner plates (well priced at $10+/-.)

We were welcomed with a basket of chips and salsa. This is a good hospitable way to start a meal and wish more restaurants brought it back (and Chinese restaurants to serve rice with their food instead of charging it as a side dish.)

We ordered a plate of house special Diabla (chicken, beef, and shrimp) and beef Veracruzana (a little spicier than Diabla.) They were well seasoned, not overwhelmed by any particular spices, the flavors were zesty and well balanced. The vegetables were cooked just right so they retained the texture and meat was also correctly cooked. We opted for the home-made corn tortillas (flour is O.K., but nothing is better than fresh home-made corn tortillas) which led us to a second helping of tortillas to finish our plates which were generously portioned with rice and re-fried beans.

And there is the FLAN!!

Although we were full, we had to try the flan and we were lucky enough to get the last cup.

It had a well developed caramel flavor, and the texture was intensely creamy like cheesecake (maybe a little maisena in the batter) which was unexpectedly pleasant to the palate.

Service is friendly and accommodating.

We were very happy with the experience.

A very nice find just a block from the Steinbeck Center near the end of Main St. Salinas. Pica Fresh Mex makes fresh, authentic Mexican food which my family and I really enjoyed. The chips and salsa were excellent, and the refried beans that typically come with an entree were the best ever. These were really atypical beans, but were sooo good; not at all the overbaked, dried-out mush you usually see. I ordered the Camarones a La Diabla, which are some really large delicious prawns in a very spicy sauce. Muy bien! The La Diabla sauce is quite unique, and Pica Fresh really knows how to make it right. In short, everything was good here, and I look forward to our next visit.

We stopped to visit the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas and were looking for a restaurant. We asked some local people what they recommended. They pointed out Pica Fresh Mex which was right across the street from where we parked to visit the Steinbeck Center.

The restaurant had recently changed ownership - the chef bought the restaurant from the previous owner who had spent four years developing his recipes. Our family of two adults and two teens dined on scrumptious Mexican fare while enjoying excellent and attentive service. The free wi-fi was a plus. The homemade re-fried beans were delicious as was the Mexican rice. The portions were generous. The homemade guacamole was made fresh right before serving. We enjoyed burritos, a chicken quesadilla, tacos, chips and fresh pico de gallo. The quality of the food was high - everything tasted fresh and was not greasy. The four of us dined for around $40. Stop in here and then enjoy the National Steinbeck Center!
