I was looking for a good meal, and the motel guy said this place had good seafood. The fact that they brew their own beer was icing on the cake. So I ordered the sea bass, a new item on their menu, and a Scottish Red Ale. I chose the beer after being offered a sample of a couple of the beers, a nice touch. The only minor disappointment was that the brewery was in the process of making its stout and porter, and they weren't available. The Scottish Red Ale was crisp and tasty - but the big surprise was the bass. It came on a bed of risotto, spinach, artichoke and mushrooms, and was incredible. Seared a tad on the outside, tender and moist inside, and absolutely delicious. The risotto was a perfect complement, a wonderful medley of flavors. The portion was ample enough to leave me feeling stuffed. The price was about $20, and a bargain. The restaurant is just down the block from the Steinbeck Museum, another Salinas must-see.

Beer, Beer, Beer.
What? Oh, yes - lots of good food to go with that brew selection (some 20, many made on site).
Noisy and fun.
Parking is getting scarce, the area is recovering nicely. John Steinbeck Museum a block away.

The location close to Maya Cinema is good. Beer is OK. Food is OK. It is convenient, but the menu is a little tired.

Well, we're on our way back to southern CA from Seattle during the Christmas Holiday. This is the lasst leg of our trip for today and food sounded good. Specifically, beer. Favorable reviews brought us to the Monterey Coast Brew Company.

The place is in a revitalized area in downtown Salinas with plenty of character. Parking was in the new garage just around the corner. On entry we find an exposed brick interior, lots of room and plenty of light. Moderately busy. We were seated quickly.

Our server was Lacy. Cute. Perky. Told us way too much of her pesonal story. We ordered a 16 ounce Pilsner ($5.50) and Scotish Red ($5.50). Food was a nacho platter ($8.95) and a BBQ tri-tip sandwich ($14.95). Beer arrived quickly. It was cold and tasted good. Food followed.

The nachos were good. Jalapeno peppers came on the side. Not very hot but good flavor. BBQ tri-tip had far too much bread and the sauce was far too sweet. The fries were good.

Our carb fest ended uneventfully. We secured our parking voucher and made our way back to the garage where we got in the car and headed back on our way. Most llikely not to return as there are many better places for a beer and nachos. However, if you're looking for a decent beer, this place is OK.
