“Ultimate wine tasting experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2014

There is not a more private and wonderful experience in wine tasting in the Napa Valley that I know of. Only one group at a time; you must reserve in advance. Then, you get buzzed in to the property and drive a windy road to the McCrea house. While waiting for the tasting, you can look around at the wine making equipment and perhaps some semillion grapes drying in the sun. Then, you are greeted by one of the owners (in our case, the wife), and taken into their house. You sit on a porch overlooking the Napa Valley and you get to taste the wines while learning about the process and products of this single-owner 60 year old estate.

In addition, if you like Graves-style wines, they are fantastic, long-lived, and collectible. A memorable experience.

“Best winery experience by far”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2014

Our visit to Stony Hill was by far our best experience of all the wineries we visited while in the Napa Valley. While most were quite crowded and touristy, with emphasis on selling wines, Stony Hill was a casual, delightful, peaceful and thoroughly enjoyable breath of fresh air. I had found Stony Hill online, and was attracted to them because they produce more of my favorites, white wines. You must make a reservation to do a tour and tasting, and when we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the tour was just for my husband and me. Sarah, who I believe is the daughter of the owners, led us around the gorgeous grounds, and we chatted about their history and philosophy on wine-making. Her sweet old dog, Milo, tagged along. The grounds are stunningly beautiful and peaceful. No tourists, no buses, just a few employees and us.

From there, we were seated at a lovely table outdoors where we tasted 7 fantastic wines - two Chardonnays, Gerwurtzraminer, Reisling, a rose, a dessert wine, and their Cabernet. Sarah was helpful in guiding our somewhat inexperienced palates and noses to detect the nuances of the wines, and shared stories as we tasted. Since we loved so many of them, and they are not distributed in our state, we joined their Wine Club and ordered 4 bottles to start.

The experience at Stony Hill was by far our best of all the wineries we visited, and their wines were all delicious and affordable. Highly recommended!

“personal visit at a small gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

This is a small, family owned vineyard on a one lane road up a hill. Since it is small, you get very personalized service. You felt like you were going into someone's house when you did the tastings. A lady met us outside and we received a short tour and history of the winery. I was even able to do a wine barrel tasting. We did six tastings (5 whites, 1 red). We were even able to meet the wine maker during our tasting. These wines are not sold in PA so I'm contemplating joining their wine club. Bottom line: I really enjoyed the wines and the views were fabulous.

“A delightful surprise!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2012

Not being fond of the oakiness and butteriness of most California Chardonnays, Stony Hill was recommended to us by a couple of people as an option, and the people who recommended it were absolutely right!

We were greeted into what could easily be the home of the owners, but as Willinda McRae, one of the owners, explained, they wanted the home to serve as a place from which their appointment-only visitors could enjoy the views and warmth of a home while enjoying their wines. We tasted their Gewurtztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, a late harvest dessert wine, and (I believe) a Cabernet Sauvignon. The three whites were all wonderful, and the use of oak is limited to very old oak, so the flavor doesn't come through to the wine at all--a wonderful change! The wines are balanced, well-structured, and apparently suitable for long-term cellaring, although approachable now. Additionally, they are very reasonably priced. Views from this small home/winery are beautiful.

“Piece of Paradise!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2012

Stony Hill vineyard was the best experience of our trip to Napa Valley. Ms. Willinda McCrea, the owner, hosted us. The vineyard is the prettiest of all with views to die for. Our tasting was on the patio overlooking the vineyard and the wines were outstanding as well. Every single wine we tasted was delicious. We were fortunate to run into the wine maker Mr. Mike Chelini. He took the time to explain the process of wine making and walked us through all the steps. Even the employees that work there were very friendly. It was a nice family atmosphere. We had a hard time leaving the beautiful property!!
