“Unexpected Delight”
Reviewed June 18, 2014

Our stay at the Wine Country Inn was not planned in advance, as we didn't book the second week of our California trip. Upon arriving in St. Helena, we visited the welcome center for ideas and they connected us with the inn. It was wonderful. We received a walk in price for two nights in a terrific room with a private patio and outdoor jacuzzi overlooking the vineyards. General Manager Tim Polk could not have been more gracious explaining the amenities, the history of the inn and the vineyards. Room was comfortable, clean and quiet. Breakfast was consistantly good, the staff was helpful, and good wines were available at the evening wine tasting. When we asked for a third night, we were given a private cottage which was even more spectacular. Love the place. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Get a cottage if you can afford it.

Hi Dale. It was great to meet Debby and yourself during your recent California visit/stay at the Wine Country Inn. It's funny how many of our guests plan their trips m-o-n-t-h-s in advance...while others, like the two of you, are a little more last-minute. I'm so glad that you enjoyed our property, our amazing vineyard views, and of course our hospitality. Hope to see you both again soon. (And yes, the cottages ARE the way to go-ha!)

Best,

Tim Polk

My wife and I can't say enough about how great this place is and how wonderful the employees are! They really went out if their way to make our stay wonderful. They are all locals so they know the area well and clearly love it! They take care of everything from dinner & activity reservations to shipping your wine back home for you. I can attest that they not only went out of their way for us but for all of their guests. We saw it time and time again. We recommend going on an incursion (ask for Marty as your guide....he's awesome!). And take advantage of their shuttle to and from the local restaurants. Janelle was the driver when we were there and she was so friendly and made excellent recommendations for every restaurant. The property is absolutely beautiful. Try to stay in one of the cottages if possible. We can't wait to go back!!

John, it was great to learn that the two of you had a wonderful stay here at The Wine Country Inn. Hosting Meredith and yourself on your honeymoon was fun for us! You two certainly took advantage of most that we have to offer, including a couples massage, our "Inn-cursion" wine tour (yes, Marty is a hoot!), and our evening car service to local restaurants. And of course, a stay in our beautiful Kate's Cottage. Please keep us in mind for your future anniversary getaways!

Cheers,

This is such a fine establishment to call your home for a few days. It is definitely more like home than a hotel. The cottages and rooms are extraordinary. The way the rooms and cottages are furnished you would think you were at a home, which in fact you are. Tim, Carol, Kelly, and the lady in control of getting you to dinner and back safe and sound, Jeanette, are extraordinary hosts. We had such a good time. The breakfast is terrific. The views are terriffic. If you want to get away from the cares of daily hum drum life, try the Wine Country Inn.

We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: The cottages definitely win out over the rooms. However, you cannot go wrong with one of the beauti...

We enjoyed meeting and hosting our new friends, the A's, from Texas. We're so glad that you found our little "escape" and enjoyed it so much. I will share your positive comments about our staff with the team. We look forward to your return visit!

We have stayed here before, but the prices keep increasing. The setting in a vineyard is as beautiful as ever.

The rooms however are not what they could be. Despite an updating, our room in the lodge looked tired. The bathroom was adequate. The brass/iron frame bed was too high and small for real comfort. The room was large and the view over the vineyards remained lovely.

The breakfasts have gone downhill. There was a lot of bread, a small selection of fruit, sweetened yogurt, very sweet granola, hard boiled eggs, and a prepared egg dish. Most of it is not for the health-conscious, or for those those who love bacon or sausages.

The hotel seems to be trying to attract the young romance market. There is a constant slide display in the main common room that shows young couples or singles in various states of dress. It's tiresome, intrusive and tacky, especially in the context of a beautiful natural setting.

We have not found anywhere better to stay in the area in the same price range, so would probably return despite the downsides. The Silver Rose in Calistoga was more comfortable and less costly, but now only takes corporate customers.

Dear Billie61,

Thank you for sharing your opinions about your recent stay. I'm disappointed that not everything met with your approval.

Part of the charm of a 20-year-old+ property like ours is the comfortable feeling. Part of the challenge of a property like ours is that, yes, rooms in particular can become slightly outdated. Please know that we renovate 2-4 rooms every year. I'm not certain which room you folks stayed in, so perhaps you stayed in one due very soon for the proverbial "fresh coat of paint."

I will review with Chef Ryan our breakfast selections. We do tell guests at checkin to please speak up if they have any special requests, which we are happy to fulfill within reason.

For your next visit, I would like to suggest that you reach out to me personally, and I will help guide you to one of our recently renovated rooms. You can reach me directly at tim@winecountryinn.com. We will of course extend to you our 15% return guest discount. Our prices have gone up slightly over the years, but always (we feel) with a corresponding new amenity for guests (such as our complimentary evening car service to local restaurants, etc.).

My best wishes,

Tim Polk

I chose this place b/c I go to Napa on biz frequently and it's nice to stay in the Valley and not drive all the way to Napa. It's not a business-type of place, but it worked perfectly. Great free WiFi, great (fast) serve-yourself breakfast, and nice to come back to wine in the lobby at day's end - great to meet local producers and taste (and buy!) Staff super-friendly, beds super-comfy. would definitely return for a proper vacation stay! You're five minutes from the nearest wineries and great central access to the entire valley, and easy trip up to Calistoga and beyond to Sonoma.

Room Tip: Room 1 was great. First floor; beautiful private patio overlooking vineyards.

We stayed in queen 7. We started the one day trip with the Wine Tour. Worth every penny. The staff was really nice. Not having to drink and drive from any location or choosing which one of us could do more tasting was absolutely great. My wife and I agree it was best day ever and I wish we would have been in town longer to enjoy more of what it was offering. I would recommend this place to anyone and look forward to going back again.

Room Tip: Queen 7 worked for us.

Nick, it was great to meet the both of you on yes, your quick, one-night trip. I have to say, you two weren't here long, but you did it right! Roses upon arrival, our Inn-cursion wine tour, dinner at Press, and of course a stay in our Room 7, with that great balcony with the vineyard views. Please come see us again when you can stay longer, and Happy Anniversary again to you and Kylie. Cheers!

My BFF and I just returned from our week in Napa Valley. This place is quiet, and surrounded by vineyards. One of their best attributes is they have a driver who'll take and pick you up for dinner if you say in the area. Our room was spacious and clean and had a great view. Their breakfasts were fantastic and they will accommodate any dietary needs- Just ask.

We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay at The Wine Country Inn. We take great pride in keeping our grounds kept up, clean, and of course beautiful, with wild flowers, olive trees, and assorted foliage. And yes, guests also LOVE our evening Car Service to local restaurants. Our two drivers, Chris and Janelle, are very knowledgeable about the local restaurants.

We hope to have you stay with us again soon.

Best,
