The staff are just about the friendliest I ever met and the rooms are amazing. They have free car service to take you to dinner at local restaurants as well. We stayed in one of the lower cottages and it was impeccably clean and everything worked. We will be back!

Room Tip: The cottages down below look out on a vineyard. If they are doing work on the vineyard, you can hea...

We have been traveling to St. Helena for over 20 yrs. We love this city for its location and great little downtown. We discovered The Wine Country Inn back then and have been staying there ever since. We have slept] from the attic room in the main house to rooms in 'the barn' and this last time we were in one of the cottages. How nice to receive a personal note from Jim welcoming us back. Pick your reason to stay here: the location, the rooms, the deluxe breakfast, the evening wine and cheese tasting... We look forward to our next trip to California.

We've stayed here several times for personal get-aways. The location is ideal and places you mid-way between the best wineries in the area. The rooms are cozy, clean, and the beds are super comfy. We've stayed in a different room each time and its fun to see the decor variety in each room. We always use the in-room fireplace in the evening. The breakfast is fantastic and the staff is friendly. They are always willing to make recommendations and provide tasting discounts as needed/wanted. Its a little on the pricey side, but so are most places in Napa.

We had a great experience here. Stayed in the cottages, Very comfortable and beautiful with great views of the vineyards. Centrally located in Napa Valley close to the tasting rooms of some of the best wine in the world and surrounded by fantastic restaurants. Staff was very helpful and the chef every morning made fantastic breakfasts. Thank you Ryan! Every evening after exploring the valley we came back to hors d'oeuvre and a wine tasting from one of the local vineyards. After dinner stopped in for a late night cookie. Cottages have all the amenities from fireplace to huge walk in shower, even heated floors. Can’t wait to go back.

Room Tip: Cottages 29-31 are fantastic. We stayed in 30. Friends stayed in 31.

We stayed here for 3 nights in March 2013. I think the rooms vary quite a bit in terms of size and decor. Our room (room 1) was dark and dingy. It felt like I was sleeping over in the rec room of my grandmother's old house. The walls are very thin so you can easily hear conversations (and other activities) in the rooms next door. The bathrooms are motel quality - small sink area, stand up shower with old grouting, and toilet. On the plus side, we had a fireplace in our room which we used every day, and the staff prepared it expertly so that you could easily light a lovely fire with one match. Our patio area outside the back doors of our room had a beautiful view of vineyards and was really nice to sit outside. Be warned that noisy tractors can start very early in the morning...I think they started around 6:30 AM. However the inn supplies ear plugs specifically for this, but if you're a light sleeper this could be an issue. The inn provides a very nice appetizer and wine tasting each evening and there is a nice patio area outside the dining room if the weather is nice. The breakfasts are excellent - however don't believe the posted breakfast hours (until 10:30). As once they have run out of their hot breakfast feature, that's it. We came down once at 10:10 and there was nothing left (although they offered to scramble us an egg).

Room Tip: As the rooms seem to vary quite a bit, you might want to check a few rooms out before selecting whic...

Thank you for your comments and yes, all of our rooms are quite different from one another. Room 1 is definitely one of our most rustic feeling rooms. It helps to book well in advance so that you have a full selection and certainly visit our website, each room is represented with photography and a full description of the amenities. You will note that none of our rooms are decorated in that hip new corporate-chic style. And yes, being out in the country, surrounded by vineyards there is occasionally some farming noise. We think it is a good trade-off. At least its not highway noise!

We were particularly troubled with your experience at our breakfast. I have no idea what happened here but I can assure you this is the first I have ever heard of our breakfast "closing early" or being out of food. We take great pride in our breakfast and feel we have one of the best complimentary breakfasts anywhere. I am truly sorry this happened. It is true that sometimes our guests go overly crazy for the egg dish we have prepared, but when this occasionally happens (3 or 4 times a year), we are always available to cook eggs to order. I have talked to my staff and though none of them remember cutting breakfast off early, I can assure you they have the word now.

Thanks again for your comments. It is only through feedback like this that we grow.

First the good: the location was beautiful, the grounds were extremely well kept, the staff was mostly nice, there was a free shuttle to and from local restaurants at night with a great driver, and the room was mostly pleasent with a decent bed.

But now the bad...

We stayed in Room 4 and the the wall to the room adjoinging our neighbors was shockingly, incredibly, horribly, tragically thin. I am talking virtually no sound proofing at all. I got an inkling something was wrong when I noticed the earplugs on the nightstand next to the bed. Sure enough, that evening we learned that we could hear EVERY SINGLE WORD shared between the middle aged woman and her elderly mother in the room next door. They were not particularly loud, and certainly not obnoxious or rowdy, but it was almost as if their words were amplified in our room. The thin walls then ruined any chance of a restful sleep when our neighbors' alarm went off at 7 am (which was really like 6 am because the spring time change occurred that same day) and the conversation between the two started once again. Notably, we knew they were getting up that early because we heard one of them say so thourgh the wall the night before, and we even used the ear plugs so we would not hear them in the morning, but it was no use. It was just like having our neighbors right there in the room with us talking. I am an experienced traveler, having spent many nights in Inns, Hotels, and Bed and Breakfasts, and I have never in my life experienced such poor sound proofing in a room I have stayed in.

Upon checking out, we told the front desk person that they needed to do something about the thin walls. She said, "oh you stayed in this building? Yeah it can get pretty loud in here." She also said that it is "a 30 year old building" (ummm... I didn't know that sound proofing did not exist in the 1980s) and "what are we supposed to do, tear the place down and rebuild it?" Eventually she partially discounted our stay, but the surly attitude really didn't do much to smooth things over. Anyhow, the room was not worth the nearly $400 price tag and we certainly will not be going back nor will we be recommending The Wine Country Inn to any of our friends or family.

Room Tip: Stay away from room 4!

Thank you so much for your comments. This is the first time we have had a complaint of this magnitude regarding our soundproofing. It is true that when my father first built the Main Building of The Inn he did not do much soundproofing. When we built the Brandy Barn and Hastings House and then the five luxury cottage we had learned our lesson and done much more soundproofing.

However we have been working to improve the soundproofing in the Main Building and are truly surprised at your experience. The only thing I can think of is that we recently upgraded those rooms with hardwood floors instead of carpet. This must be causing echoing off the floors. We will look into this issue immediately. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. To be honest I don't think we will ever be able to match the soundproofing in our other buildings, but we have to do better than what you described.

We have stayed here twice, once for our very first trip together as a couple and the second time during our honeymoon road trip. We stayed in cottages that had views of the vineyard both times and truly relaxed while we were there. The staff is very accommodating, and offer some really lovely perks, like a shuttle service to the restaurants in town, late afternoon wine and apps, as well as a delicious breakfast in the morning. We look forward to our next romantic visit to the Inn.
