Owner description: Looking for somewhere off-the-beaten-path & refreshingly different in Napa Valley? Come visit this iconic Napa Valley boutique winery, hidden away on Spring Mountain, just minutes from downtown St. Helena. What were you doing when you were 7? If it wasn’t winemaking & distilling alongside your dad, that’s ok! Charbay began its American story in 1983 – when Miles & Susan Karakasevic launched their own dream, following in this family's European tradition. Since then, the journey has encompassed both wines & spirits that have caught the attention of wine enthusiasts & spirits lovers across the country - and two generations here in the U.S. Grab a rocks glass - your tour begins with an aperitif & 'Distilling 101' where you'll learn the how this 13-generation winemaking/distilling family makes classic Alambic brandy. From there, you'll get introduced to Charbay's classic small-lot wines, as well as Napa Valley's favorite port - made with our 30-year collection of Alambic brandies. Humidor of handrolled cigars available to enjoy on the winery patio. Pair it with your favorite wine or port & enjoy the Napa Valley countryside. Charbay is one of the only wineries in the U.S. that distills its own brandy to create the ports and aperitifs you'll remember. To make a great port, we believe you should add a great brandy. So we pick from our 30-year library of barrel-aged brandies made personally by our family's 12th & 13th Generation Master Distillers, Miles & Marko Karakasevic.

The drive up the mountain to get to Charbay is wonderful and just an added pleasure to the visit. We were amazed at the history and wonderful information that is shared as you taste some amazing wines, aperitifs and ports to die for! Great and fun place to spend a few hours, plan on it taking a few hours too! We found ourselves pleasantly surprised that we spend 2 1/2 hours there and could have stayed longer!

This was a more, "off the beaten path" excursion, and we loved it! Lots of education about distilleries and some great tastings and pairings. Wound up buying a lot from here. Interesting ideas, Chardonnay Vinegar? Pomegranate Cabernet? Awesome.

My wife and I visited Charbay while visiting Napa. From the moment we were greeted by John and the two dogs, this was unlike any wine tasting we had. The people running this place are very personable and also passionate about what they do. They made us feel at home and we had a number of good laughs.

The tasting experience was also very different because they not only make wine, they also made aperitifs, and port. Most places tend to give very small samples, but John was more than generous with the pours!

Every where we went after this we told people they needed to go check out Charbay. We would love to visit again.

Charbay is definitely off the beaten path. The drive to the winery/distillery is up this beautiful winding road...lots of foliage, trees, etc. It's a small, family owned winery. There are different tour/tasting options, we chose to reserve a picnic table and brought our lunch. Johnny Ray was our tour guide/bartender and he was very entertaining. We tasted a number of wines, a green tea appertif and a couple of ports. They had some of the best wines and ports that we tasted on this trip. We purchased quite a bit and the only criticism is that we still had to pay for shipping. Many of the other wineries that we visited do not charge shipping for orders over $250.
