We went to Ella for our 12th anniversary after hearing great reviews from friends. The place is an eclectic mix of local happy hour hipsters, older folks dressed to the 9s (on their way to the opera), event celebrators (like us) and families with birthdays, etc. In other words, anything goes. They sat us near the bar, which was initially disappointing but the view remained excellent and we had no complaints.
Service was a bit off; our waitress was very nice and friendly but somewhat slow. She had to pull out her notes (on a crumpled notebook) multiple times when telling us about the specials.
Drinks were fantastic. My husband's wine was excellent and their gin and tonic (with house-made tonic) lived up the the rave reviews. Our cheese plate appetizer was a great sampling of unusual and interesting cheeses.
My scallops (with creamed kale and bacon) were probably the best I've ever tasted. Perfectly done, excellent presentation, perfect portions and balance of flavors. My husbands cioppino was savory and packed with seafood (we're from the east coast so we've had good cioppino; while this cioppino didn't stand out it would definitely hold its own).
All in all a great experience.
