“One of the Best in the Area”
Reviewed July 7, 2014

We went to Ella for our 12th anniversary after hearing great reviews from friends. The place is an eclectic mix of local happy hour hipsters, older folks dressed to the 9s (on their way to the opera), event celebrators (like us) and families with birthdays, etc. In other words, anything goes. They sat us near the bar, which was initially disappointing but the view remained excellent and we had no complaints.
Service was a bit off; our waitress was very nice and friendly but somewhat slow. She had to pull out her notes (on a crumpled notebook) multiple times when telling us about the specials.
Drinks were fantastic. My husband's wine was excellent and their gin and tonic (with house-made tonic) lived up the the rave reviews. Our cheese plate appetizer was a great sampling of unusual and interesting cheeses.
My scallops (with creamed kale and bacon) were probably the best I've ever tasted. Perfectly done, excellent presentation, perfect portions and balance of flavors. My husbands cioppino was savory and packed with seafood (we're from the east coast so we've had good cioppino; while this cioppino didn't stand out it would definitely hold its own).
All in all a great experience.

“Delicious food, service fell short”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

We found a lot to like in our first dining experience at Ella. Some creative and delicious cocktails, equally creative and delicious "small plates" like bourbon baked oysters, cedar-plank roasted Toma cheese, and bacon-wrapped trout and pan-seared scallops for dinner. A great wine list with both domestic and international selections. Not sure if our server was having an off night, but things like bringing out the wrong bottle of wine and serving us tepid coffee not just once but twice -- we asked another server for some hotter coffee and she gladly did so, then when he came back to refill later it was with more lukewarm coffee again. Just sort of lackluster and absent-minded, and when we're dining at an establishment like Ella we expect everything to be exceptional. We can recommend it for the food, and our guess is that most of the time the service is better than what we experienced.

“Try the Gin and Tonic!”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

Went with the family (ages 10 to 70) for a birthday dinner, and was pleased that we were treated & seated well despite have a child with us. The G&T was truly delicious, the shrimp cocktail was perfect, the pork chop was a tad overcooked but had great flavor. My son ordered the fried chicken and ate every bite (no kids menu so be prepared to pay full prices if you do decide to bring a little one). Sweet corn ice-cream on the cobbler was my favorite part of the meal. I would go back for another special occasion.

“Excellent Meal--Fresh Local Ingredients”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

This is a GREAT restaurant. My wife and I recently visited Sacramento, and found the restaurants to be terrific. This was the best of the bunch. From the Artisan Cheese Board to the wood fired Pork Chop, everything was delicious and fresh. The staff was friendly and helpful, and assisted us in selecting a great bottle of local wine. You will not be disappointed.

“Innovative menu”
Reviewed June 25, 2014

This upscale eatery offers interesting dishes, nice wines, and a full bar in a pleasant contemporary setting. They seem to specialize in seafood dishes prepared in a wide variety of ways, including grilled options. Salads and soups are also very good.
