“Under renovation and noisy trains”
Reviewed January 25, 2014 via mobile

We were warned about this hotel on trip advisor and should have listened. Train noise is hard to mitigate. They even give you earplugs and that still does not help. We chose this hotel as we wanted something close to restaurants but not loud. Not only is it impossible to walk to nearby restaurants but I seriously question if this should be a location for a hotel. The trains whistle and run all night.

Dear Otwoma,

Thank you for taking the time to share your hotel experience on Trip Advisor.
We're truly sorry the train noise had such a negative impact on your visit. Unfortunately, by law they have to make their presence known at a bridge or street crossing. The truth is they don't have a particular schedule, so many nights the horn blowing isn't an issue at all. We're sorry it was such a busy night for the trains when you were here.
The entire train situation is very personal, many of our guests aren't bothered at all, others find it annoying and some even love the sound of the whistles blowing. Again, we're sorry you found it so disruptive. For the record, the rooms on the south end of our building, hear the least amount of train noise.
In regards to restaurants within walking distance from our hotel, you are right, we are limited. However, we do have a complimentary shuttle, by appointment, to a plethora of restaurants within a 5 mile radios.
Sincerely,
Joanne Stienkemeyer

We stayed here 2 nights on a business trip. We have found Fairfield Inn's to be consistent. This location is no different. The rooms are comfortable. They have a refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot and iron/ironing board in the room. The beds are always comfortable. Even though there was a train nearby we didn't hear it. We had a great night's sleep. The breakfast was good. In addition to the basics they also had scrambled eggs and sausage. There is always coffee in the lobby. We will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: They have carts and an elevator.

This is a very nice hotel with very comfortable beds and a nice flat screen hdtv. In room coffee and wifi are provided as well. Earplugs are also supplied and needed as the train goes by the property about every 2 hours. The morning breakfast was good with scrambled eggs and sausage offered. I would stay here again.

Spent a night at this hotel on a road trip from Vancouver to LA.

The hotel is relatively easy to get to from the freeway. After we dropped our bags off, we set off in search of some dinner. There's not much nearby on foot, but there's a pretty wide selection of dining and shopping options a short drive away.

As for the hotel itself, it was clean, pleasant and comfortable. Breakfast selection was a pretty good mix of options. The staff members we talked to were really friendly and helpful. If we're in the area again, we would definitely return.

My business partner can hear the elevator in the next hotel and spends lots of time and effort making sure he finds the quietest room in the hotel. So, I'm now more aware of noise. I knew something was up when I found the hotel provided earplugs on the desk. A little while later I found out the train tracks crossed a road nearby.

So, given the silly Federal rails laws governing super loud, omni-directional horns, you can certainly hear the trains. Not as bad as half of Tucson but train noise is going to be an issue for you, you might think about booking someplace else farther from the tracks.

I love staying here at the Fairfield Inn, Cal Expo Sacramento because of a myriad of things. Mostly, the comfort of the rooms and beds is comparable to that of the more expensive Courtyard. The amenities are there, and the facility is always clean, well stocked and has the friendliest staff ever!! They are professional, courteous, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. They have gone out of their way to help when they did not have to. There is a train that goes through every once in a while, but not to the point where the building shakes, and it distracts you from sleeping. And, the comfort level of the bed cancels out any quick train noise that may occur. The complimentary breakfast is robust and filling, making one feel like they are getting their monies worth. I am a return customer and will continue to be so. Kudos to the Fairfield Inn Cal Expo Sacramento! Keep It Up!

Room Tip: Second Floor rooms are more quiet for adults with no children which are usually on the first floor...

We are Marriott Rewards Members and we mostly stay at Marriott on all the different point levels. So we are familiar with them and have come to expect a certain standard. We have always found Fairfield Inns to be a good value with excellent rooms and amenities for the price. So with that in mind, I'm sorry to say this property is in need of some serious upgrades. First let me say that the staff was excellent and professional, and they worked hard to accommodated our Gold Member preferences. We always appreciate that attention to details for their preferred members. Makes things nicer and easier for us.

But here are the issues...
I didn't so much mind the old furniture; it's in good shape and clean. But my issue is with the bedding! The mattress was super comfortable, but the quilt is RIDICULOUS! The stuffing has matted into firm, visible balls in the middle of each square of the quilt! It was a crazy, lumpy mess that was totally obvious to see. If we'd gotten into our room earlier than midnight, I would have asked for something different. Thing is, I'm pretty shocked that housekeeping has let a comforter like this be used. It was soooo uncomfortable all night. I had an empty spot of sheeting on my shoulder, but a hard, 4inch matted ball of batting on my face! The whole quilt was like this. Terrible. We eventually looked for a blanket, which we found in a drawer instead of the closet, and it was not in a plastic cover (a normal thing for Marriott).

The towels were clean, but old and thin. More like the towels in a cheapie motel, not normal for a Marriott. Breakfast was the traditional eggs, sausage, waffles, hot oatmeal, hardboiled eggs, fruit, muffins, etc. Works for me on my low carb diet.

Anyway, I'm thankful our room was clean and the mattress was comfortable, but the crazy quilt needs to be thrown out! I would not stay here again until upgrades are made.
