“we liked staying on a paddle steamer!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2011

We liked this hotel and wished we had stayed another couple of nights. its in a good location and it was novel staying on a 1938 paddle steamer! The boat was well restored and had a nice feel about it. the rooms are quite small though, as you would expect, but mentioned just to set peoples expectation. The staff were very helpful.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting somthing a bit different

The Delta King is a restored paddle boat located on the Sacramento River one gangplank from Old Sacramento's attractions. Within cobble-stoned streets and historic buildings, and a railroad museum, one can find touristy shops and places to eat. Beyond, under the I5 overpass, is a Starbucks and Westfield Mall shopping. Keep walking and ahead six blocks is the Capitol Building. Across the river, accessible by a golden bridge past Joe's Crab Shack, appeared to be a river walking path but was underwater due to the recent flooding.
The Delta King itself is charming. Very clean, firm beds, hot water, hundreds of TV channels, and free internet in the lobby to print your boarding passes and check email. The first night I wandered up to the bar and had a delicious burger while listening to the lively Irish band. No lounge lizards, just real fun groups and a fabulous view.
From the concierge, front desk help, to the bartender, the staff was friendly and efficient. The clerk even upgraded my room to river view for free. Free breakfast included. I hate cookie cutter box hotels and like quirky. If you like the unusual, have an interest in maritime or history, want great walking location, and free internet access in the lobby, the Delta King will fill your needs. If you want quiet romantic, or staid, stay midweek. If you go with teens, a spouse you scream at, have children who stomp til bedtime, or don't mind those groups, then go on a weekend. Rooms are small, like ship's quarters, so if you are a "big and tall," you may not be comfortable. Thursday night was quiet and I slept til ten. Friday night was active and I was up til 1 then awakened by early morning risers. Didn't upset me but light sleepers might be peckish if they need their beauty sleep. No pets or smoking on board.

Such a beautiful hotel (ask for a riverside room). Exceptionally friendly staff and great service, excellent restaurant.
Old Sacramento is a really historic town and this is the perfect place to stay. The town is busy during the day but has very little nightlife which was disappointing. However this makes for a very quiet night's sleep and the hotel has a lively bar and very good restaurant.

My husband took me for a romantic stay and it didn't fail to impress. Drinks on deck overlooking an inky black river with the twinkling lights of Sacramento on the opposite bank. This would be the perfect Valentine's break. Do it!

This is a beautifully restored River Boat which exceeded all my expectaions.
I am a business traveller who has travelled the world for many years so know a good thing when I see one.
The "rooms" are charming. I saw some reviews complaining that they were small but these are cabins and as far as cabins go they are large. They are certainly clean and comfortable and the hot water is instant.
Service was excellent whether in reception, the bar or restaurant and the owner, Charlie Coyne, was often buzzing around taking a close interest in what was going on.
The restauarant is top class with crisp white linen on the tables and staff who know what they are talking about. The chef knows what he is about too which is the most important thing.
The location in Old Sacramento is delightful and the river setting is beautiful, interesting and most important of all, very quiet at night so I got three very good nights sleep there.
I almost booked up at the Comfort Suites which are OK but this was something in a different league altogether. Try it, you won't be disappointed. BillC

We love this place. It is an authentic riverboat. Old world charm but modern amenities. The Pilothouse restaurant is not to be missed. We would go there even if we were not spending the night. My wife had the duck breast without the confit potatoes, since she has gluten issues. They have lots of gluten free dishes. I had the rib eye steak, cooked perfect. The lounge has nice, adult, live music. Not too loud to talk. Lots of nice wine choices by the glass. Other guests were talking about the mystery dinner. We'll try that next time. This place is a real find.
