“Lemon Grass, Sacramento International Airport, Terminal 1”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

We were doing our usual food court scouting in Terminal 1 at the Sacramento International Airport last week. Nothing caught our eye...until we spied the Lemon Grass Vietnamese cubicle. The server seemed eager to please and offered details about the different dishes. Pho, that wonderful Vietnamese soup, was there, as were tofu and chicken spring rolls.

We had a guest with us who had never eaten Asian food, much less Pho. But, he was willing to try. I wish I had a camera to record the pleasure that he got as he inhaled the perfumes from the cilantro, basil, and all the different sauces. He did not leave one spoonful and walked away as a Pho convert.

We chose tofu and chicken spring rolls but decided to save them for the plane trip. What a surprise! They were so fresh that the curly red leaf lettuce was as fresh as if it had been just picked.

I marvel at the determination that it must have taken to open this small stand at the airport. I can only imagine the regulations, the fees, the costs and the work to make the Lemon Grass happen. Now that I have read about it, I learn that there are other Lemon Grass locations in Sacramento and Arizona. If they are this good, we may have to try the original in the city.

Congratulations to the owners and staff for taking airport food way above the ordinary.

“Delicious, lovely, consistent”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

We have been coming to Lemon Grass for over 15 years. I have yet to be disappointed. The decor is lovely, the service great, and the food is always fresh and delicious. The consistancy of the quality of food and preparation is a true treat. For the ambiance and food the prices are very reasonable.

“Can't Go Wrong”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

On the remodeled site that was once an A&W, Lemon Grass' Asian food has been at a top level of quality and popularity in Sacramento for years. It has a high-end menu of moderate price. Not the least expensive in the city, certainly, but moderate in price considering the innovation and quality that the restaurant provides. If you were to ask residents in Sacramento if they ever have had a "bad meal" at Lemon Grass, I think you would be hard pressed to find a "yes"--from anybody. The restaurant is vegetarian-friendly and you can eat there expecting to find food that is low in fat but high in flavor. Our family has traveled Asian countries repeatedly but has yet to find, for example, green papaya salad (topped with grilled prawns at Lemon Grass) prepared better, anywhere.

The dining facility is comfortable and classy and the service is consistently good. You really can't go wrong.

“The food is good but the hostess is not”
Reviewed May 11, 2012

I have eaten here several times and have had a few good experiences, but lately they have been so-so. The food is good, but the menu does not excite. I usually can't decide what to eat at a restaurant because there are so many great choices. For some reason not so here. But the real kicker is the staff. The hostess was no where to be found on my recent trips and had to be located by a waiter. Same for the bartender. When she was located she had no idea who to wait on first as a pileup had occurred at the door. Instead of handling the situation she left again and let the customers haggle out who had come first. When we were finally pointed to a table she told us she did not have time to explain a question we had about a dish. We left the restaurant--we felt we were in her way.

“A bump in a usually smooth road”
Reviewed May 7, 2012

It should be noted from the outset in our experience over the years that Lemon Grass is that rare combination of superb food, friendly and attentive service, a lovely and inviting atmosphere and prices that aren't outrageous. It has a full bar and a wine list that is varied in both selection and price range, the latter feature all too rare in good restaurants. The menu offers a thoughtful, inventive and inviting twist on Thai fare which is to say it isn't ethnically heavy-handed but rather a far more subtle dining adventure. The problem on our most recent visit is that parts (vital ones at that) of our dinners were served cold. It's a testament to the restaurant's cooking that this didn't entirely put us off the meals, tasty as they remained. We're not the type of guests to send back a meal short of a felony, but we wouldn't want this experience repeated. This is one of the area's top restaurants, and we fully expect to return.
