Ravenous is one of the best kept secrets in Sacramento. It's a small place in a strip mall dominated by a 24 Hour Fitness, but don't let that fool you. The food is on par with top notch downtown eateries, and the service is always excellent. Their burger (with portobello mushrooms and blue cheese) is a favorite, as are the mussels. The ribeye steak and rissotto of the day are also incredible. The chef always has specials for the day, and is willing to take requests for special needs (like my vegetarian sister and finicky eater niece). All of the food is beautifully plated. They have a deep wine list featuring local wineries, good beers available, but no full bar. It's a place where you can feel comfortable dropping in for a casual dinner or lunch, but also works as a great date night or special event restaurant. It's the perfect little neighborhood bistro!

Wouldn't expect much at a neighborhood shopping mall in the Greenhaven-Pocket region in the south area of Sacramento, but Ravenous tried hard to please, though in my opinion, fell somewhat short. It is a small compact place that had few diners when our party of eight arrived at 7:30 PM. Our waiter, Joe, was friendly and efficient, getting our wine opened promptly and getting out some excellent warm bread served with soft butter that came in cute glass containers rather than in foil. The Caesar and caprese salad presentations were quite nice. The buratta cheese was tasty and the red cluster tomatoes were as good as you can expect in February. No problem getting some extra balsamic dressing for the caprese. The mushroom salad contained several varieties and again was presented nicely. Three in our party shared ample ribeye steaks grilled medium rare as ordered and served with a delicious portobello mushroom and garlic mashed potatoes. My wife and I had the risotto that contained flavorful sirloin tips, but the small potatoes were quite hard and were obviously undercooked. We shared the NY cheesecake with fresh raspberries and chocolate mousse for dessert. The cheesecake was good; the mousse was not much to write home about. Overall, a pleasant experience, will come back and try some of their other offerings.

We live in the Greenhaven Pocket neighborhood, so choices are few, which is why its great to have a terrific local restaurant. But frankly, its too good to think of it as the "local place". We'd drive to go here. A block off the freeway, so no excuse not to give it a try the next time you' ll over where to go. Reservations recommended because word is getting out.

Ravenous is a quaint neighborhood bistro located in the Pocket/Greenhaven area of Sacramento. It was a delight and we will return. The food was quite good and the service was attentive. I had mussels as an appetizer - they were huge with good flavor. I also had a very tasty eggplant dish and shared some crab-cakes. They also have a small, but well represented wine list. We were out of town visitors yearning for a quality neighborhood bistor like Ravenous in our hometown. Two thumbs up.
