“Upscale Mexican Food but Nosiey”
Reviewed January 23, 2012

Went here for dinner with some friends and their little girl(10yr). The place seats about 60, huge bar, located across the plaza from the Broiler and IMAX. This place is quite noisy, probably because of the concrete floor and concrete walls, noise tends to vibrate around.
Our waiter was average but the manager or assnt. mng was top notch. When we were having problems getting more drinks, a replacement kids burrito they were right now.
Food is a mix of mainstream mexican mixed with the upscale flavors starting to surface. We had Mol chicken (excellent),Chorizo crusted Rib eye (not really crusted, just a topping, and well overcooked more like a fajita). Drink menu is pretty different and diverse; very cool. Prices were about $40 per person with drinks. It was difficult talking to our party but if you want a night out with a little excitement this might be your place.

“best margaritas and regional mexican cuisine in town”
Reviewed January 14, 2012

Second visit to Mayahuel and it was really happening. It's a fairly big space, so even when it's crowded, many areas are not noisy. We were up in the front, in a small area with only three tables and we conversed comfortably without shouting even though the place was packed on a friday evening. Some of the margarita concoctions here are really outstanding. We tried one with watermelon and cucumber, and another spicy one with mashed bell peppers, which tastes better than it sounds - both outstanding. They also have an extensive tequila menu if you want to do some tasting. The food was also excellent. We did an appetizer for the table of six different regional "bites," some of which were memorable (I will come back and try a bigger plate of the cochinita pibil; the little crustini with rajas a la crema was also really good). The flor de calabaza soup was also tasty. We all came famished so the three of us all ordered a rib eye with a chorizo crust, also excellent. We tried two desserts: a flan which as I recall was flavored with orange and chile, but we really liked the chayote cheesecake. The atmosphere makes this place located in a part of downtown Sacramento (about a block from the capitol) where you wouldn't necessarily look for either trendy decor or especially good food. While I love the atmosphere at Zócalo, I think the food is better and a bit more adventurous here. I'll add that we had read a review in the newspaper that the food here was good, but the service uneven. Our experience was much better: attentive service, helpful descriptions of menu items, good suggestions. A memorable evening.
