“Nice Hotel, but Check Your Bill”
Reviewed July 15, 2011

I booked a lovely discounted room at the Sheraton Grand, Sacramento, through Southwest Airlines.
Booking airfare and hotel as a package was a money saver. The room was large and well appointed. The discount was reasonable. Also, free use of the hotel computers was great for checking email and printing boarding passes.

When I checked out, the hotel bill showed the discounted rate. I was basically satisfied with the service and amenities.

Imagine my surprise when my credit card statement arrived at my home a few weeks later, and the Sheraton had doubled my bill and overcharged my credit card even more than the regular price of the room, let alone no discounted rate. It is my opinion that this was not just "an honest mistake", but something that happens with the Sheraton.

To say the least, I was very stressed out by this episode. The saving grace was that I had used my American Express Card. Although AmEx handled everything immediately, and I eventually got a refund, I will not use this hotel/air or whatever again.

Lesson learned; pay close attention to every bill when traveling and after the statements arrive at home.

The hotel is nice with a good lobby for easy lounging and a happening bar, a small but efficient front desk staff, but definitley could use a little better air conditioning/ventilation system in the rooms. The rooms are small, and very stuffy.

This Sheraton served as our 'home' for more than a week and it was a successful stay from start to finish. The property combines a historic building with a modern multi story guest room tower adjacent to the convention center. They preserved the old building and celebrate its past history with photos.

CHECK-IN: The front desk personnel were friendly and informative. I happened to walk up when no one was around and they had me off to the room in seconds. Later in the day I saw a large crowd arrive and they processed them in a couple of minutes. A supervisor seemed to be around the area most of the time.

GUEST ROOM: They were well designed with comfortable furniture. They feature plenty of surfaces to work on. The beds were comfortable to my taste. Bathrooms are large and well laid out. Minor complaint -- they should have more electrical outlets around the desk and the other work surfaces. Housekeeping was excellent all week. Nice touch -- single serve Starbucks coffee maker.

MEETING ROOMS: We made use of these all week. The staff was always present and on the ball. Banquet food was decent.

RESTAURANTS: Morgans serves breakfast on the upper level. The buffet was thin on options and pricing was typical for a down town hotel. The staff was overwhelmed by our large convention and often had a waiting list for tables. Later in the day, many of our group ordered food in the bar area and once again the staff was running around to keep up. One server had been working 12 hour days. They could have been better prepared with more employees on duty and additional food / drink in the inventory.

LOCATION: The convention center is right across the street and many restaurants are within one block. There is shopping -- Rite Aid, c-stores, and a mall nearby. Parking is valet in a garage and expensive.

Overall, it was a great week in a well managed hotel. The staff made us feel like family and the well maintained property was a comfortable place to meet, relax, eat and drink.

Stayed here with friends for a convention. It was very nice. Great service. The rooms were nice, beds comfortable, very clean. We really enjoyed the location, close to shops, great restaurants, and theaters. Parking is across the street, only downside.

We have been platinum SPG members for the last 6 years and this in the only club lounge we have been to where we have had to pay for drinks. We have been to some where the lounge was closed for the weekend so we were surprised that this one was open, however to have to pay for drinks after we had paid to have a club lounge room was a bit of a joke.
We did get a better room than booked which was nice and spacious but there was not either a mini bar or a safe, no ventilation in the bathrooms and a door that didn't stay open was a bit annoying too. Come on Sheraton. Starwood need to seriously look at their branding and their consistency across the hotels. Great location for the county hall and the staff were very friendly.

We stayed here for one night, in a King club level room. The room was nice sized, with a big picture window, with a window seat. The bed was comfortable, and the room had good lighting. The bathroom was nice, with a granite countertop, but the shower was only okay, with an old smallish bathtub, and nice amenties in the bathroom. There was only one chair in the room, one robe in the room, no honor bar, and no safe. The club lounge was nice, with good appetizers and cookies in hte late afternoon/evening (although you had to pay for beer or wine), and the continental breakfast was great, with pastries, hard boiled eggs, cereal, toast and bagels and croissants, and Starbucks coffee. Parking was expensive, $18 for self park, and $25 for valet. The location was good enough, although stuff closed in the evenings (Starbucks across the street was closed at 6:30pm). We walked to PF Changs for a good dinner. We got a great rate online, so this was definitely a good value.

The Sheraton Grand is a clean, comfortable, and well located full service hotel.

I stayed at the Sheraton on a Friday night with a friend on my way for a family visit in Reno. The hotel is well located in Sacramento, just a few blocks from the capitol and midtown (where there are several good restaurants). Check in was quick, friendly, and easy, although it would be nice if they had a line for elite members as there was a ten minute wait.

The rooms were modern and clean, with a comfortable bed and the standard amenities you would expect. As some others have remarked, the placement of the TV is a bit strange but otherwise I appreciated the well lit room.

Although I didn't use the fitness center and pool (why bother when you can run outside :), the facilities looked adequate. Likewise, it appeared as though there was a relatively convenient bar and coffee shop in the lobby although I didn't have a chance to try them out.

Save yourself the parking charge though by parking on a nearby street. As long as you're an early riser or willing to add a few dollars to the meter, you can avoid a hefty and unnecessary $18 parking charge. Also, if you're a California resident, check out their special: $99 + tax per night!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the elevators.
