Playing tourist this weekend and was able to get in on this tour last minute. So glad I did. Our group was a fun bunch and Roy, our guide was fabulous. We got to know "the history of Sacramento that they don't put in the history books" - very informative and fun.

I thought the food would be the real star of the tour (don't get me wrong, it was all all to die for...) but it was speaking with the chefs that was the real highlight. The passion and approachability was incredible. Chef Shannon at Bernardos was so engaging asking us what restaurants we liked so she could check them out. She gave us all her email and offered to give pointers and answer any culinary questions we might have when trying new reciepes. And it went on at each stop.

What was considered a "tasting" at each stop was nothing like the Costco portion I was expecting. So glad I didn't have breakfast...

You already know to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. If you could find out the final destination for your tour and park near there you will be so much happier. Our tour ended about 6 blocks from where we started, and it seemed like forever walking back to the car. You have been walking for 3 miles, but always had the promise of the "next taste" to keep you motivated. Not so much walking back to the car - lol.

It took every bit of 4 hours - so keep that in mind when parking. I am looking forward to trying some of the other tours and even some in other areas (based on tips from others in the group)

Great way to enjoy a Saturday afternoon by walking the beautiful yet often unnoticed neighborhoods of midtown Sacramento. Historical perspective and information on sites we had lived near for 30 years but knew little about from our well-informed and fun guide, Lisa. We loved our discoveries of new-to-us eateries, especially the Italian market/deli/bistro Sampino's in midtown Sacramento and a very cool and eclectic local coffee house. Wonderful way to rediscover our home territory, taste a lot of wonderful and inventive fresh dishes, and make new friends. We never quite got around to having dinner as we were so full of all the good food!

“Great Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

A friend and I recently took the Local Roots Food Tour in downtown Sacremento and it was a great experience. The tour is approx. a 3 mile walk through downtown and along the way we stopped at five restaurants for a taste of their wares. In a couple of places, the chef came out to talk about "farm to table" dining and about their establishment and offerings. As a foodie, it was a great experience. The food at each place we visited was delicious and I loved that we got to try several types of food including Thai and Italian. Our tour guide, Nate was very engaging and made the tour all the more fun. He gave us historical information as we walked through the tree lined streets of downtown Sacremento. If you love food, history and being out of doors, I highly suggest your look into taking one of the Local Roots tours.

“Fantastic mid morning walk.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2012 via mobile

Using TA we found local roots as the number 1 in things to do in Sacramento. Thought we would give it a go.
Fantastic.
Nate found us at the meeting point and with another group of two we ventured forth.
Five stops over maybe four hours all on foot at a pace anyone can manage.
Ameretto French toast, Pork tacos with white rice and black beans with a Magaritta, your pick of ice cream, bruschetta with roasted peaches lavender honey and buratta cheese, to finish your choice of coffee.
A few words from staff of each stop added to the dishes served.

Had a great time and will be going back for breakfast at Bernardo's cafe, dinner at centro and a whiskey hamburger at Fomolis.

“City Of Trees Tour, Local Roots Food Tours”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2012

My friends and I just went on the City of Trees tour offered by Local Roots Food Tours. If you are looking for something different and memorable to do in Sacramento, check this out! Each of the 5 restaurants we visited was separated by a leisurely walk, with stops along the way to hear some fun and interesting stories about the history of Sacramento. Our guide, Nate, was the best!

We sat down with the chefs at each restaurant. These busy, hard-working chefs were gracious, engaging and passionate about the food they plan, prepare and present. The food is outstanding with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal, local and organic. We were so impressed by the passion of the talented chefs we met. Very inspiring!

The food at each stop was beautifully presented and the flavors were amazing.

This is the 2nd food tour we've experienced with Local Roots Food Tours. The Origins of Sacramento tour is outstanding as well. The tours offer a unique and wonderful way to discover new restaurants, meet local chefs, and explore Sacramento neighborhoods. We plan to return to the restaurants we visited. What a fun way to spend an afternoon. You will not go home hungry! We definitely plan to return and experience the other Local Food Roots tours.
