“Great Tour!”
Reviewed May 25, 2014 via mobile

Loved visiting the Governor's Mansion and going back a moment in time. The tour guide that lead the hour long tour was full of helpful information. There was a special needs child in the tour group and our docent was very attentive to her needs. The mansion is grand and stately. I don't understand why Mrs. Reagan did not want to live there! The home is full of character and you can just imagine the events occurring shared by our guide. This is must for anyone interested in California history. The tour only cost $5, which makes it very affordable.

“See how the governor's use to live”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

Today, it is used by Gov Jerry Brown to host dinners. In the past, it was lived in by the governor's family. It shows the changes in architecture, along with interior design over the years.

“New and Improved ;-)”
Reviewed May 13, 2014

I visited the mansion in August of 2012. It was hot and uncomfortable and I didn't enjoy it very much. This time it was a mild day (early May) and it was much more enjoyable. The 3rd floor is open and in the next few months they will be painting the first 2 floors - it should make it a more elegant home (it now is dingy, cracks in plaster, etc.). Fun stories about the house and how it came to be the Governor's Mansion and stories about the families who lived there (my favorite is how one daughter painted the claw foot tub "toenails" red - they are still red). Tours are on the hour from 10am to 5pm - we were the only ones on a Thursday 3pm tour. Nice gift shop - that is in the old "barn" - You can buy water, I can't remember if they sell food as well.

“Newly refurbished 3rd flr & informative guided tour: A+”
Reviewed March 25, 2014

As a native Californian who had visited the mansion once as a teen, I was enchanted by the beautiful Victorian heritage of this mansion as well as its political history and the powerful 13 governors' families that had lived there 64 years! The 3rd floor ballroom refurbishment was completed in Nov. '13 per the park's guide, and so the tour includes rooms on that level and the views are nice as well. The bulk of the furnishings, including hand-knotted Persian rugs and executive office china & silverware in the dining room, are on the main two floors and the tour groups are small enough to linger and take photos of rooms, pictures or artwork; architectural details are splendid and plentiful -one small parlor was the breakfast/lunch room of a number of governors' families and there is a photo of President Kennedy visiting taken in that room. Another room was used by teen children and included historical clothing, dolls/toys. I really enjoyed the kitchen with its enormous copper range hood, butler's pantry and turn of the century communication system. Tour guide shared a lot of history about infrastructure developments made in the state by Gvnr. Pat Brown, Jerry Brown's father, and legacy various other govenors had. Govnr. Reegan lived there only ~3 months. Tour was highlight of my short trip to Capitol.

Our present Governor meets and eats with people once in awhile and who ever is lucky to be invited can not say enough about this gorgeous house.
