“Great way to spend an afternoon.”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

Our friends took us to Old Sac since it's on the "must do" list for visitors. From trying out unique olive oils at the Olive Mix, costume shopping at Evangeline's and a tasty burger at one of the joints there, a great way to spend an afternoon in Sacramento.

“Circling the drain”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

This is our fourth visit to old town in as many years, each time it seems to be not as good as the previous visit. Make sure to bring change for the parking meters if you don't use the paid parking facility. They have change dispensing machines, but leave someone at the meter in case the parking officers arrive before you return. Instead of rewriting the gory details, see my Sandman Hotel review. I hope Old Town get's their act together & return to the great place I use to know

Various shops, some good restaurants, and the old west feel is great. Worth your time checking it out for a few hours.

“Such a change in 30 years!”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

Thirty years ago when we lived here, the old original downtown district had been liberated from its former skid row self. The streets and buildings had been beautifully restored to their gold rush era. The storefronts were filled with shops that were different and a treat to step into. There were wonderful restaurants both at the upper end and some for the families on a budget. But all were pleasant. The railroad museum was then more of a dream than an actuality.

What a difference 30 years has made. The museum today is a GEM, worth the trip from anywhere. The streets and buildings remain the same...and then it goes downhill from there! A few nice shops cling on in hopes of profitability but most are reverting to tattoo parlors, t-shirt shops and other trashy tourist clip joints. If you're looking for food on a stick or on a paper
plate it's there but most of the nice restaurants have abandoned Old Sac. to be replaced by a predictable chain or two. The vagrants are filtering back in as are the "nothing to do" local kids that spill over from the adjoining mall.

This area was once a gem that is now a sequin at best.
