Although the fort is a bit removed from the central tourist areas of Sacramento, you should try to add it to your visit. We stopped on our way into town and found that it provided an excellent introduction to understanding the development of Sacramento. Be sure to watch the video because it talks about different stages in the city's history and some important decisions that had a great Impact on the city. Sutter was a very interesting man with great ideas about how to create a mercantile center. Even though he did not end up a wealthy man, he is important for his role in the gold rush and the history of California.

We accompanied our grand son's class on a 3 day bus trip and Sutter's Fort was the first stop. The history was great. The day that we were there , the staff was dressed in era attire, and talked the talk. Had a great time and would go back.

Sutter's Fort, a slice of history surrounded by modern day Sacramento is a wonderful juxtaposition of the old and the new that puts the fort in historic perspective.

This place is really great to give kids an impression how life in California's 1840s was like. There are lots of activities to take part in.
The only thing I think about is a discussion about the person of John Sutter...

Visited on a busy Thursday morning. School kids (4th graders) dressed in period dress were busy at various activities, candle making, spinning, cooking, grinding flour, etc. It was part of an extracurricular school program. It was really amazing to watch the kids. They were to spend the night there too. So, not only did we have the opportunity to visit the fort and explore its many nooks and crannies, we got to experience through the kids a glimpse into life at the fort and how it was back in the day.

This is a wonderfully restored historical venue and well worth the time to spend exploring.
