“Fun Historical Fort”

This is the "birthplace" of modern CA, IMO. What happened here, when it happened and all that ensued is what put CA, actually the entire western region, on the map, so to speak. Well worth taking the kids to as well as a peaceful place to visit and reflect on history.

Hadn't been there for at least 25 years. Still very interesting and good information. Enjoyed taking the grandchildren to see it.

“leisure summer outing”

I was there this last summer with my friend & kids. The people were dressed in the historic time period costumes. It was great to see a little bits of history in action.

“Great Field Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

If you visit the fort on a regular day, there's a lot to see, but it's not very exciting. It's always more interesting when they do reenactments. The best thing about the fort is the Environmental Living Program (ELP) teachers can sign up to participate in. The ELP allows students to come to the fort dressed as pioneers and to participate in activities like weaving on a loom, baking bread in a bee hive oven, weaving baskets, working a grist mill, cooking in a period kitchen, and more! As part of the ELP program, parent volunteers get trained ahead of time and teach these activities to their children. It's the best living history experience! ELP days are Tuesday and Thursday. If you're going to the fort during the week, aim for Tuesday or Thursday so that you can see "pioneers" in action! The program is very organized and it's the highlight of the school year!

“Great Living History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2012

Sick at heart and weary in body after crossing the Sierra Mountains, this fort was the first and main stop for the pioneers when they reached California. Home to arguably the largest, displayed archives of California history, it is a must see for all native Californians and visitors.
