Owner description: Frog’s Leap was founded by John Williams in 1981. Started on a shoestring budget even the name itself was ‘borrowed’ by combining Stag’s Leap, where John started his Napa Valley winemaking career, and the Frog Farm, where the early vintages were made. The winery was relocated in 1994 when John and his family moved Frog’s Leap to the historic Red Barn in the heart of the Rutherford appellation. This grand and welcoming building was built in 1884 as the Adamson Winery and sits amongst some of our 200 acres of estate grown vineyards. Over the past 30 years Frog’s Leap has earned an enviable reputation with our unique combination of a whimsical label, sincere dedication to sustainable principles and our small, handcrafted production of wines. Over the years to come we look forward growing and learning more about ourselves, our wines and how we can share it all with honesty and genuine hospitality.

We hadn't purchased Frog's Leap wines before, but had certainly heard of them, and given the great reviews both the wine and winery received on tripadvisor we decided to go - and I'm really glad we did! There was just one tasting flight, so no tough decisions, and we went right before lunch (around 11:30am) on a Wednesday and I'm happy we did because it was peaceful (they said they're busier in the afternoon) - there were literally only two other parties there so it was quiet and we received a lot of attention (we were seated at a table on the terrace and received table service). They also give you complimentary cheese to snack on, and they will happily pour you additional wine for any of the ones you liked - which I took them up on, and proceeded to walk around their grounds which were quite lovely. The wines were good, but I thought the real reason to go was the experience you get at the winery - the people, the service, and the beautiful grounds were worth more than $20.

My wife and I hired a car service and guide, James with Flex Wine Tours (reviewed independently), to take us around Napa for 2 days. We toured 8 wineries in two days, 4 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday.

Frog's Leap was our first winery of the day, as we were advised to get there early before the herds of people came in. We were greeted and brought to our high top table on the back patio overlooking the gardens. Our tasting was pleasant as we were presented with 4 wines and and cheese plate. Once the wines were poured, the attention is pretty much gone. We took our last glass of wine for a stroll of the gardens.

Of all 8 tastings, our "experience" here was the poorest. We prefer the boutique winery where we receive personal attention and taste the library/reserve wines. For example, we did several small estate tastings where we spent 1.5-2 hours with the winemaker throughout the tasting.

I really think Frog's Leap is a great place, but just not our style.

We stopped here on a wine tour. If you're looking for personalized service, I'm not sure this is the place for it, unless you book a private tasting. They had a bar setup out back in the "garden" which is where we were served. You could get a glass and then wander the garden area with your glass and come back when you wanted. The garden area was very pretty, but all the seating was taken, and there wasn't any good places to stand, so we ended up on the side of a building which lacked a view. The servers were polite, but didn't seem to be very knowledgeable about the wine, they just poured it, told you the name and sent you on your way. Not bad if that's what you're looking for though.

We really enjoyed our tasting at Frog's Leap. It's a little smaller and less known that other vineyards, but house and terrace are fantastic and staff friendly. Wines were tasty as well, especially the Rutherford Cab.
