We belong to BV and several other wineries in Rutherford as cellar club member. We recently had a chance to visit them for complimentary wine tasting and had lunch at Alex and Auberge du Soleil. Overall, the dining experience at Alex was far superior. The amount we spent for lunch and wine at Alex and Auberge du Soleil were virtually identical (around $155 for two of us), but we found the quality of cuisine and service at Alex much more satisfying. The biggest difference was the quality of service. While the wait staff at Alex showed the desire to serve, at Auberge du Soleil it took forever to place our order. The view that Auberge du Soleil offers is certainly nice, but the intimate ambience at Alex is equally attractive. It's sad that the only good thing we remember about Auberge du Soleil is the helpful valet parking. We would definitely go back to Alex, but don't know about Auberge du Soleil.

This is a little Italian place right next to Rancho Caymus Inn in Rutherford. Not on the main drag so a little hard to find, but worth the hunt as the food was great and the wine reasonably priced! Good job Alex's!

This restaurant is outstanding. It is a close to Italy as you can get. The owner is Italian, from Cinque Terre outside of Firenze. I'm Italian as well and the night we were there a well known chef from Italy was eating there near us outside.Alex/Alessandro, is the owner and not knowing that we were Italian, came over to our table to speak to us.

I could go on about the superlatives of this place by specifically describing what we ate. But I will only say that everything was excellent, well presented, and as authentic as possible to Italian cuisine inside of Italy. Pasta made by hand, fantastic octopus and other appetizers, and the combination of flavors are so well executed by what is a true genius of a chef. Our waiter was wonderful as well.

I love Michael Chiarello, but this place blows out Bottega. It's not even close. FYI, the chef knows Chiarello well, worked at Bottega, and studied in Italy. I'm not saying Bottega is a bad option because the food there is very good indeed. I am saying that Alex is simply more geared to the food and not the the hype of a celebrity chef.

Forget Bouchon and Celadon, this fairly unassuming restaurant had the best food we had in Napa - and we just sort of stumbled upon it. (Bear in mind that we were there for lunch, not dinner.) We found the service friendly and efficient and were impressed that the waiter - when I was torn between two bottles of wine - actually recommended the less expensive one. (How often does that happen?) And it was good. The food was scrumptious - especially the cheese flan with wild mushrooms and the duck "two ways". (Magret and confit.) Perfectly prepared. There's a small patio for outdoor dining. We REALLY enjoyed this place.

Nice small eatery behind the Rutherford grill attached to a hotel. Nice interior and pretty darn good food. My hat off to the chef...very innovative and tasty. Alex the proprietor doesn't have a clue about taking care of his guests....all he does is walk around and speak Italian. His server Will is in deep space. Poor service, lack of detail and a very rude summarizes this experience. Clueless in Rutherford will be the next big hit.
