Despite having heard good things from friends who had been there years earlier, we should have listened to tripadvisor. Very impersonal and uninformative experience despite the fact that we were only two people in the tasting room. Indeed, my impression is that this used to be a nice experieince, but as Cakebread expanded, the tasting suffered.

There are so many great wineries that produce not only great wine but a memorable experience, as well. Neither of these criteria were found at Cakebread. Several of our friends highly recommended visiting Cakebread. After scheduling a tasting over the phone, my wife and I arrived about 15 minutes early to the visitor center and were promptly greeted and offered to begin our tasting early (definitely an appreciated gesture). From here we were led across the property to their tasting room. We asked our guide a few questions about their grapes and vines, and his response made it perfectly obvious he had no clue the answer, and did not offer to find out for us (not that it was that important, but still...) We were the only members of our tour group, so we really hoped for a more intimate experience. That was not how it turned out, as our guide seemed completely disinterested in his job. Overall the wine was average and the "tour" and "experience" was not worth the $20/each tasting fee (you could keep the souvenir wine glass used during the tasting, which is a nice gesture as well). Overall, we felt like we could have gone to a number of other wineries dotting the highway and would have had a much better experience. Skip this one!

The wine was average, but the tour and tasting experience was terrible! They stuck us in their shipping room (esentially the garage) and wouldn't let us leave. We stood in this garage to taste 5 wines, and when a member of our tour group tried to leave to view the grounds, he was scolded like a child. Terrible experience... much better wineries in Napa. Steer clear.

We visited about half a dozen wineries on our trip to Napa Valley in June 09, and this was our favorite. We were disappointed when their tour was booked up (we tried to make a reservation about a week ahead of time), but made an appointment for a tasting instead. The tasting may as well have been a tour, because we walked throughout the winery and our tour guide was very informative; at $10 apiece, we thought it was a great deal. We would definitely return if we ever have the chance to go back to Napa Valley.

We took the tour at Cakebread and were very disappointed. This is my favorite Chardonnay and I was really looking forward to the visit. However, the tour was less than satisfactory. It was harvesting time and we weren't allowed into the inner workings - which was strange because Mondavi allowed us full access. So basically the tour was walking from their front entrance to the back room where tastings were set up on either side. You first walked in and got a white, and then walked over to the other room for the reds. Not very imaginative, not very informative and a disappointment for a winery that makes such a fine Chard.
