This was our third visit to Cakebread Winery over a 12 year period. With each visit, we have seen the original charm of Jack and Dolores Cakebread slipping to the tourist trap that it has evolved to now. Where they once had knowledeable and charming guides walk you through the vineyards behind the houses, and told you just how the Cakebread family was working to improve the quality of their wines, you now pay your $30 - $50 for touristy wine tastings by people who had been hired as tour guides. We decided this trip to try the food and wine pairing (at $45 per person). The guide was a young man who was very impressed with himself, but didn't even bother to explain why one food paired well with one wine versus another. This young person did such a poor job of leading the tasting, that all 10 particpants were shocked. Not wishing to make a scene at the time, I sent an email to Cakebread Winery afterwards to complain about the poor quality of this event. This was, of course, never responded to. Save your time and money and visit other wineries; there are plenty!
