Owner description: Grgich Hills Estate is an iconic Napa Valley winery, consistently producing world-class wines. Vintner Hall of Fame inductee Miljenko "Mike" Grgich first earned world-wide recognition when the Chardonnay he crafted won the 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France. Mike then partnered with Austin Hills to open their family-owned-and-operated winery in 1977. Committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability, we farm our five estate vineyards without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, rely on wild yeast fermentation and use our passion and art to handcraft food-friendly, balanced and elegant wines.

We enjoyed their progressive tasting, which stressed the history of the winery and that of Mike Grgich (Gur-gitch). After reading the name for many years, I was happy to finally learn the correct pronunciation. While waiting for the tasting to start, we had an opportunity to take a close look at trellises of several of the major Napa varietals. The wines were excellent.

Had a rough start with a rather short tempered hostess but all ended on a positive note. Had 6 for a tasting and we were rushed out the door before being seated. After some encouraging conversation they put together a table and we had a good time. Bought a case of wine, they took care of the tasting fees and gave us the 6 glasses we were drinking from.

All in all 4 stars. Would have been 5 If the hostess would have been a lot nicer from the start.

Another outstanding winery to visit along the Napa trail. Here they actually let you "stomp" the grapes as part of the tasting experience. A must stop, particularly if you have kids as they will love crusing stems of grapes with their bare feet!

Stopped here due to a change of plans and glad we did. My wife and I participated in the wine stomping/put your purple feet on a t-shirt activity ( this was during the harvesting season) as well as wine tasting. The wines were very good as well as their signature chardonnay. Included in our tasting fee was that we were able to keep our etched Grgich Hills glasses. This brought more value to our stop. The staff there were great. I have recommended this winery to my friends and family if in the area.

Watch the movie 'Bottle Shock" before visiting here and you will appreciate it that much more. The owner was there the day we visited and was signing bottles for people. Again, skip some of the bigger names in Napa and check this place out.

Thanks for your visit and we’re glad you got to meet Mike Grgich. Of course, we’re not big fans of “Bottle Shock” since it doesn’t show that Mike made the wine for Chateau Montelena that won the 1976 Paris Tasting.
