We were staying with other family members at the Mission Inn and decided to go to Duane's one of the 4? 5? restaurants at the Inn. The dining experience was like that I recall from the 70s in a high end restaurant -- the head waiter in uniform and multiple people providing service throughout the meal; ambience is dark and luxurious. So given the memories of days gone by we ordered the chateaubriand. While at first it might seem pricey, given that this is indeed dinner for 2 AND includes a delightful array of fresh vegetables, it actually is something of a bargain. For other meals, all vegetables are a la carte. Everything was beautifully cooked and the table-side chef accommodated our different preferences to steaks (medium versus medium rare.)

The only glitch was before we even got into the restaurant! We were having pre-dinner drinks in the lounge just outside the restaurant; I notified the maître d' that the 7:30 party of 4 was in the lounge and available for seating at their convenience. The maître d' said, "I notice that the gentlemen in your party are wearing shorts. Long pants are required in the restaurant." Now, these were not casual or short shorts, but what I would consider to be "dressy," certainly so given the casualness we have experienced elsewhere in California. Luckily we were staying in the hotel so our gents could change. While they were away the woman came and asked, "now they won't be wearing sandals will they?" Once we were in the restaurant, I quite agree that the fellows would not have been comfortable, given the environment, even in their dressy shorts. However, I wonder why, when we made the reservation, we were not alerted to the dress code. And I wonder, "what would they have done with gentlemen from Bermuda whose suits include shorts?!"

Service was superb, the food was mouth-watering, words fail to describe. We dined on filet mignon, potatoes, and asparagus. I couldn't imagine a better dining experience.

Our steaks were cooked to perfection - try the Steak Diane - it's a great price point and just the right amount of meat, veggies and potatoes. The fresh bread is also great. Nice wine list. Excellent service. Miss the table-side caesar salad. Beautiful dining experience so ask for a table by the large, famous Teddy Roosevelt painting.

Duane's is the go-to place for special-occasion dining in Riverside. Located in the Mission Inn, the place drips with ambiance and old school dining traditions, including tuxedoed wait staff and sommeliers.

Duane's has a couple of signature dishes that we have consistently enjoyed over the years: one is a magnificent chateaubriand that is carved table-side and the other is a traditional Caesar salad made the original way with raw eggs, fresh lettuce and anchovies.

On a recent visit to Duane's, we ordered the Caesar salad and were told by our server that it had been removed from their menu. She offered no explanation or apology, but instead pointed us to some lame concoction of a salad on the menu with the word Caesar in its name, but containing no Caesar salad ingredients, other than lettuce.

This will likely be our last visit to Duane's. For a restaurant to yank one of its best dishes off the menu without apology or concern is a sign of pure arrogance on management's part. Perhaps it was too much effort for the servers to make up the salads table-side or perhaps the owner's attorney was worried about the risk of serving food with raw eggs. In any case, Duane owes its loyal customers better than this.

For this capricious and abrupt menu change, Duane's will receive a "poor" rating this time around.
