There was some difficulty over reservation policies for packages, but Markus (thank you!) got that sorted out and we spent a very pleasant night after attending a retirement dinner in town. A far better idea than driving back to Orange County and a very pleasant experience in its own right. Sable (hope I got that right) checked us in, and could not have been more attentive and concerned that we have a great experience. We had a nightcap in the Presidential Bar, and the two bartenders where simply great. On top of everything without being intrusive.

Over more than 20 years we have had wonderful experiences at the Mission Inn, and are glad that this one was as well.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, ask for one away from the road.

This was never actually a working mission. They built it as a mission, but it was never used as such. Instead of destroying it, they converted it to a hotel. They did keep all the old decor, which is what makes this place so cool. They have a pagoda, a chapel, a buddhist temple, a huge spiral staircase...so awesome. Lots of secret passages and back staircases too for late night hide n go seek. They have all kinds of different rooms. Fully stocked minibar was available- beer, wine, shots-- all of that right in the room already. Huge king beds. Bathtubs. Really nice outdoor pool and hot tub. Definitely hit up the presidents lounge in the lobby for drinks and cigars. They have several restaurants, and there are lots of places within walking distance. There's not much else to do in riverside, and this place is right in the middle of town. UCR guests get a discounted room.
Highly recommended, even if you're not staying there.

As a lifetime resident of Riverside and parents of a 2 and 4 year old, we jumped at the chance to have an overnight without the little people. Grandma said on 1 condition, that we stayed in town...
Boooo.....until we saw a promotion for locals to stay at the Mission Inn. We were married here 17 years ago and stayed that night then. We know this property and area well.
Check in went smoothly and we were placed in room 140, a smaller room right off the main staircase next to check in.
Pros of this room- never having to take the elevator. Room overlooks Las Campanias (sp) with views of all the pretty plants.
Cons, everyone passes by the room so a bit too much noise at night.
The pool was fabulous. For us being locals, it really made us feel like we were not even in riverside. The cushions are in dire need of replacing and they really should think of building a bar instead of setting up a Red Bull easy up with portable bar thing to serve from.
We will definitely stay here again, hopefully before another 17 years go by.

I love staying at historic hotels. The charm of the architectural design adds so much to the experience. The Riverside Mission Inn is an outstanding venue to soak up historic charm. I was extremely fortunate and scored a small suite (room 339) located on the top floor in one of the corner turits. Really beautiful and relaxing. The hotel staff were very welcoming and helpful. I had just been to the Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel a couple weeks prior to my stay at the Mission Inn, and so my expectations were high based on the outstanding experience I had in Santa Barbara. On the whole, the Mission Inn lived up to my expectations. The only reason for my rating of 4 stars is based on the location of Riverside. Other than strolling through the historic downtown district (located right outside the doors of the hotel) there is not much to do. I am not a spa person and so for those who, then the Mission Inn would certainly rate higher. I stayed for just one evening, enjoyed my visit, but really would not expect to have a longer visit.

One other caution is the street noise. While not a deal breaker, my room did have windows facing Mission Inn Avenue and the street sounds could be heard. I would imagine that rooms off the inner courtyard are much more quiet.

Room Tip: Request a room off the inner courtyard. The street noise from Mission Inn Avenue is quite audible.

Help keep an historic inn alive -- stay here!

Although our stay was for just one night, my family had a terrific experience at the Mission Inn. From drinks at the Presidential Lounge to Happy Hour at the wine bar, room service to the pool, and just wandering around the facility, it was a wonderful stay. All members of the staff we interacted with were extremely professional yet friendly, always asking if they could help us in any further way and offering to escort us to locations we were trying to find. Our room was spacious and clean with a nicely updated television and coffee maker. All in all, the Inn exceeded our expectations in every way while we were there.

Remember, though, that it IS an older building, so rooms have their quirks, elevators may be a bit slow, and noises may travel through the stone hallways. Rather than dwelling on it, enjoy the vintage atmosphere and appreciate an Inn that has been in existence longer than nearly every person alive.

Room Tip: Loved the "Mission" rooms on the fourth floor -- VERY roomy with plenty of outdoor areas t...

The Mission Inn is one of the most unique hotels in the world. It features a a Spanish Gothic style and is so lovely you just have to see it for yourself. The spa services are great, the pool is fantastic and food and entertainment are within walking distance. It is a magical place.

Room Tip: Glenwood rooms are in the old part of the hotel and tend to more charming. The suites are amazin...

Just wow! I live locally and have visited the MI for events, cocktails and tours but only recently had the opportunity to stay. Got a special room rate due to a conference and was expecting the budget room. The room was very large, including the bathroom and sitting area. Comfy bed, tons of pillows, clean, quiet Staff there can only be described as having a gracious cordiality of a bygone era. As you wander around the hotel grounds, which you simply must do, it is easy to slip into that lost era and be transported. I was in awe of this place and thankful to those that worked to preserve it for future generations to experience.
