“Nice restaurant”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

This is my first visit to this restaurant with friends. I had their Seared Ahi and Tempura Prawns. It came with wasabi mashed potatoes, Chinese long beans, and shiitake ginger sauce. We sat in the "outside" portion of the establishment. Service was a bit slow but we were talking a lot so I can't fault them. Their outdoor heater was a bit much, but got used to it. The food was very good. I would like to try this place again with a smaller table next time.

“Consistently good food and service”
Reviewed October 25, 2013

I have dined at Mistral often over the past 7 years and always find the food to be excellent, as well as the service. The restaurant has an intimate and cozy feel, but without feeling at all cramped.

“Beautiful outside areas for groups”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

One of the few restaurants available in the area, I attended a hosted event that was taking place here. It's convenient for those visiting the Oracle campus, or the Sofitel hotel across the lagoon.
Inside, it appeared to be an intimate dining experience, although a little cramped - we were seated outside, initially gathering around the pit, which was good for the first 10-12 people, until it became too cramped.

Food was delicious, service was a little lacking, but this was also a group dinner where they may have kept back to avoid interrupting the conversation.

I'd happily attend for group events, but would probably head into the city for an intimate dining experience.

“Check the Menu Before You Go...”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

This is a by-the-numbers review-
1. You really should check the menu before you go because you're going to want to be sure you want to dine at this price point in Redwood City CA.
2. The wine list is ridiculously over-priced for some pretty mediocre choices. It's as if they bought retail and then tripled (at the very least) the price.
3. It's difficult to find... maybe even very difficult to find, even with your iPhone GPS.
4. The ambience is attractive, especially if you're lucky enough to get a window seating close to the water.
5. Our waiter was excellent - knowledgeable, helpful, and very patient with the dithering members of our party.
6. The food for the four of us ranged from quite good to rave... the rave going to four perfectly cooked and presented scallops.

“Attention to details are lacking”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

Basically, there is a lot to like about this restaurant, but five stars in this price range requires some very special efforts from the kitchen and wait staff, and it was not up to the best. There is a point where plating effects become simple gimmickry and Mistral takes some of their efforts to weird extremes. I had the sesami-crusted ahi tuna with tempura prawns. It arrived in a pile held together with a large wooden stake through everything. Looked like a child's creation. The wasabi mashed potatoes were a nice accompaniment, but the strength of the wasabi has head snapping. Details are so important. And our waiter was ill-informed and slow to recall essential information. A vegetarian at our table was served a dish with animal products. You gotta try harder if you want to a five-star restaurant!
