“Alas, its French-ness has been Americanized”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2007

I have stayed at this hotel many times for business meetings. I've enjoyed the wonderful beds and bedding, the spacious rooms, squeaky-clean bathrooms, and efficient service, all with few glitches. I've watched it change over the years from an out-of-the way hotel to a swanky, shiny hangout spot. But as an American who admires French culture, by far my favorite thing about this hotel has been its french way with food...the fresh-baked ficelles (mini-baguettes) in the morning, really excellent french-style coffee, etc. I'm very sad to report that these perks have now been infected by the ubiquitous american food disease. Coffee is now so watered down that it now falls into the 'pis' category that the French so rightly mock, and they no longer serve french bread of any kind in the morning. These are small complaints, especially since there are still good croissants to be had, but the corporate dinner we had here was appalling. On our own, lunch and dinner at this restaurant have been excellent, so I'm not sure why a dinner for 15 was such a problem. The food was very badly prepared, and the appetizer recommended by the waiter made several of us sick with food poisoning. Even worse than the nausea, I am ashamed to have been the one who recommended to our company brass that we host dinner at this hotel. Tant pis.

I stayed with my family and I was surprised by the poor quality of the hotel. The swimming pool was really dirty and water was cold. This is not a family place at all. The pillows are really uncomfortable and staff is not at all friendly. Very loud.
Also, the shower has a built in cap so the presure remains really low, you can barely shower.
I stayed at Sofitel in DC which was much better than this one. I would never stay here again.

This Sofitel is in the midst of a business park and adjacent to a small lagoon. It is just off Hwy 101 with easy access and close to airports. We spent two nights and found it quite serviceable. The room was average size for a mid-range hotel with a nice large window. Nice bed and bathrobes. Although the dining options are limited, the food was good and the presentation excellent. Service was average. The amenities were limited but adequate - small outdoor pool, snack shop, fitness room, internet stations in public areas and in rooms, and enough meeting space for a small convention. In addition, the Sofitel is within an easy walk to a strip mall which provides more food options and services. There was a level of disinterest among some of the staff which was off-putting, so the overall service rating is only fair. For business travel, this place is fine. I'd look elsewhere (like downtown Redwood City) for a charming and interesting vacation stay, however, especially if one wants to walk rather than relying on a car.

I stayed here for a business meeting. The decor is very modern-european and very lovely. Everything about the hotel was comfortable and pleasant. The croissants were to die for!!

The only downside is that the location isn't great for sightseeing. I had some free time in the evenings, but it was too much of a hassle to find anywhere to go. But, the location is ideal for people visiting Oracle, or any of the other corporations right there.

Overall a great stay.

Stayed at this hotel for one week while my husband was in town working. I thought the rooms were very comfortable. We had a suite which consisted of a small sitting rooms separated from the sleeping area. One thing I found odd was this hotel has no mini-bar or small fridge in the room. The bathrooms were very nice with quality toiletries. In terms of ambiance, the hotel was lively every nite I was there. The bar and dining area were quite full. I spent my days beside the pool reading overlooking the man made lake they have there and it was lovely. Very, very windy all day long. During the day it was borderline warm enough to swim and some did, but it still tended to be windy. At nite, it was quite frigid. Altho the hotel says the have free airport shuttle, they do not like people who are not arriving/leaving first time to use the shuttle which I find troubling since I had planned to use BART from SFO to go into San Fran during the day. The food served at the hotel is somewhat limited when staying for an extended period. as well as very overpriced including alcoholic drinks. Pleasant hotel but would not stay there if it were not work related.

In May, I visited the Sofitel while on a business trip to Oracle. I was very pleased to find out that the Oracle campus was literally right down the street from the hotel, and the hotel provided a free shuttle to work. One day, the shuttle was running a little late, so the hotel got us a cab instead and picked up the fare and tip.
The food and drinks in the hotel were a little pricey, but the atmosphere was very hip and trendy, and the view of the lake was awesome.
Our room was very clean, large, and was attended to very quickly and appropriately. The bathroom was also very clean, though the tub/shower was a bit small.
There are very good restaurants and some good shopping very closeby. They also held our bags for free while we did some last minute sight-seeing in the area before going on to San Francisco.

Overall, it was a very nice stay. We were impressed, and we will definitely stay at the Sofitel again.

Caveat: This is one of the first times I have stayed in a hotel nicer than Motel 6 (literally), so it doesn't take a lot to impress me.

The good:

*The hotel staff was friendly and knowledgeable
*Toiletries were replaced daily and was a brand
*Cotton balls, mints, cotton swabs provided in the restroom
*Ample bathroom reading material, Sofitel hotel directory and city guides (there may have been more)
*Free parking
*Open parking garage. We never had to go far for a space
*Large bathroom
*In a very safe-feeling area because it is in a business park area.
* Pleasant, creative colored lobby
*Huge cushy bed
*All of the porters were courteous and efficient
*Pewter trash cans

The bad or possibly bad:

*No coffee in the room! This was our biggest complaint
*The bathroom toiletries smelled really weird
*The hotel is located around a lot of office buildings. Great if you are staying for business, not so much if for a vacation
*No top sheet on the big cushy bed. My husband and I wondered if they actually washed those huge comforters after each guest.
*Not especially convenient to food outside of the hotel
