“Decent for what it is”
Reviewed May 10, 2012

Bed was pretty good. It was pretty clean. And it's very close to the park. Those are 3 big pluses going for it. Heater in the room was one of those units where if you leave it on for more than 5 mins. you get a huge headache. They also allow pets and have a very reasonable pet fee.

But it's hardly the 'heaven-on-earth' other Tripadvisor reviewers are rhapsodizing about. Basically, it's a slightly better than average old-style cabin motel, with slightly higher than average prices. But again, you are paying for the location. What kind of annoyed me was a preponderance of passive-aggressive little notes scattered around the cabin and in the "rule book." Always ending with "If we didn't (insert policy or rule--which were not unreasonable, it was just irritating) we'd have to raise our rates!"

In the end, because I like to support mom-and-pop places, the location is just so good, I would probably stay here again unless I camped. Especially since your other choices are all cookie-cutter franchise type hotels a bit up the road. I guess if I Pricelined one of those and it ended up being much cheaper (which is very possible) I might change my mind, especially since you have to head a few miles North anyway if you plan on eating at all.

We were there in the off-season so the price was pretty good. It was clean and comfortable although a bit small. Great location and very friendly staff.

One note is that if you are looking for a cabin in order to avoid sharing walls (we have young kids) they are actually duplexes and you might have a neighbor. In our case it was midweek and they were able to ensure we would not have that situation.

We had a 2 bedroom cottage. Clean, plenty of room for our family of 4. One bathroom, basic kitchen. Met all our needs. Can get a little cold in the bedrooms as the only heating is in the living room, so we kept the doors to the bedrooms open most of the nights. We stayed in March, so there wasnt much activity anywhere in the area. It looks like there are lots of activities in the summer time. Not a bad place to stay if you want to get away in the redwoods. There really are no services for about 10 miles, but it was nice and quiet!

Room Tip: They have several different cabins, so read the room descriptions carefully on their website.

We totally lucked into this modest bonanza of a motel right outside the Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Southern Humboldt County. The accomodations were all bungaloes stocked with amenities galore and backed by a stand of humongous old-growth Coastal Redwoods. The extraordinarily complete kitchen blew our minds: silverware for 10, the full range of pots, pans, plates, and even a crockpot & freshly ground coffee from the owners' private stash. The owners were lovely folks & run a nice gift shop by the roadside and make sure you leave with a piece of souvenir memorabilia. Definitely a must-stay next time we're through.

We only had one night to stay and loved it. Had a full kitchen, large bedroom and living room. Pet friendly, we had the two "boys". The outside area was pure redwoods surrounding us. Even Bigfoot claw marks on the redwood tree behind the cabin. Will stay again when we are back to the Avenue of Giants. And the 15 minute drive to Scotia is nothing to go for groceries. Where else can you drive thru redwoods to go shopping?

Room Tip: Cabin number four was full amenities.

Pros: very close to Humboldt Redwood State Park, dog friendly, lower priced relative to surrounding hotels
Cons: a little lower quality, a bit of a drive (15 mins) to get to grocery/food/gas

Overall we were pleased with our stay and would stay again if we were back. It was very accommodating of our dog and we enjoyed the 5 minute drive into the park.

We were inadvertently mis-directed to this resort by Google while trying to find the hotel where we had reservations. We ended up banging on their door around 9:30 that night and found that we weren't the first to be misguided 40 miles from our destination. The owner explained that there had been several people looking for the same hotel we were looking for but was kind enough to let us in after hours and since he didn't expect to rent out any more rooms that night he gave us a discount. The cabin was humble but comfortable and clean. We had a peaceful night and a quiet morning with plenty of available exploring. The next morning we had breakfast at the local cafe and toured the Eternal Treehouse. The locals were nice and it was a good stopping point between Eureka and Mendacino.
