“Hawaii without the flight!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

This is a beautiful hotel with all of the feel of Hawaii without the flight!
The employees actually like their jobs and are great at it! The food and service are wonderful and the spa is fabulous. The view out to Catalina is so pretty and their casual restaurant, Nelsons is excellent as well. Nelson's is a full tribute to Lloyd Bridges who played Mike Nelson on the TV show Sea Hunt. Much of Sea Hunt was filmed right here. The diving is terrific as well. Bring your gear, dive in and have a fabulous getaway! They have several choices of accommodation. Besides their spacious hotel rooms, they also offer casitas and villas for families that offer multiple rooms and spacious and well equipped kitchens.

Room Tip: Request a high floor ocean view room - south facing reveals a gorgeous bay and north facing gives yo...

On the site of the former Marineland of the Pacific, Terranea is a large, rambling resort hotel trying to be a luxury resort, with numerous plusses and minuses.

The location can be truly mesmerizing, as it sits literally next to the Pacific Ocean. That generally means clean air, unlike most of the LA basin, beautiful views (if not foggy) and seascapes, and more moderate temperatures than inland. I would add that staff is always very friendly and upbeat (good training). However, once you put the views and the niceness of staff aside, you start to see a rather average resort.

Here are the minuses I experienced on a recent visit:

1 - A rambling resort means that you, too, can have a larger room in a casita and have the opportunity to walk, walk and walk some more to the resort's amenities. Some resorts with this obvious disadvantage generously offer 'golf cart' shuttles. This resort does have them, but did not mention it. Of course, this does provide a plus. It really is a good place for walking, with a lot of trails and unique vistas.

2 - Check-in and check-out are truly ludicrously long. Check-in for me was at about 2pm and I was about 6th in line. Yes, all four stations at the front desk were manned and yes, we were offered water or champagne in our wait. But, a long line is not my favorite way to begin a stay. Check-out is seriously impaired, as no bill was dropped under my door the evening prior (I guess my casita was too far away from the front office). That meant driving to a busy front door of the hotel, requesting temporary parking while I was waiting in another line to check-out. Why a bill was not provided in advance, one can only guess, as my bill was as simple as two nights plus one lunch, which brings me to...

3 - The food here is worse than mediocre. I realize that my sample is small and, thus, may not be fully representative. However, I had lunch at a conference there. Awful, so after the conference lunch, I headed to one of their much ballyhooed restaurants, the Asian one. The Miso Soup seemed to have old tofu in it. The tuna tartare was OK. Finally, I attended a conference reception where food was served, so I tried the sushi, which was average quality. However, to clean my palette, I began with a small piece of ginger. Terrible! How do you ruin ginger? Perhaps serve something 'old' that has been sitting out for a while?? BTW, my solution for the lack of good food....about a 1/2 mile away was a Trader Joe's, and my room did have a small refrigerator. Food problem solved.

4 - The room in my casita was clean and a fair size. However, I really felt it was furnished more for a low-key bungalow than a luxury resort. In other words, do not expect a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton type experience.

By the way, the conference I attended was great. Perhaps that made the warts at Terranea show up even more.

The resort opened about four years ago. Lots of work on it still to do.

My husband and I are big on luxury local getaways. We were looking forward to Terranea from the reviews. As soon as we got here and experienced the zoo of a line up just to pull in we knew this was not a romantic destination. Mid week travel at nearly all 5 star luxury hotels are quite quiet. This place is filled with corporate meetings and people wearing name tags and identical looking outfits. Tons of kids running around as well.
This is a great overpriced hotel for families. There is no feeling of romance besides being near the water on a path away from the hotel. The grounds are pretty but stark of any color, lack of art and little things that make true 5 stars special.
The rooms -
Our Ocean view was a rip off there was hardly any ocean to be seen, the room itself boring, bare of color and art. the bathroom looked like any old bathroom in any house. Moldy grouting in the shower. The sliding door to the on the ground room doesn't lock.
We were here one night I didn't have time to play the move room game. This room normal rate over 500 you've got to be kidding me......
On top of your room fee expect an extra average $65 a day for self parking and report fee and tax

Bottom line - This place is NOT luxury to people who frequent actual luxury properties like Post Ranch Inn, San Ysidro Ranch, Ojai Valley Inn, Bacara, Four Seasons etc.......
This is 5 star to the basic traveler who frequents average priced hotels...

The whole $40 use of the adult pool to get away from the screaming, crying, whining kids. More insanity to bend you over and give it to your wallet. Again ... Not luxury

Romance rating 1-10 = 2
Dining at Mar'cel -
Room - 2
Grounds - beautiful corporate Disneyland vibe

Bottom line we won't be back they already got $847 out of us for one mediocre night. There's a reason they constantly send out Groupons etc.......

Room Tip: Do not take a room on their ground floor they call it ocean view but its not. Refuse a room on the 4...

A perfect location to enjoy this beautiful part of California. The resort is beautiful with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina. The ocean is a turquoise blue, and unlike other SoCal resort destination areas. Love the decor, very tasteful, elegant and coastal. Be sure to spend some time checking out their lovely collection of art. Beds are extremely comfortable. Rooms are well appointed. The spa & spa services were top notch. Spa menu featured some yummy bento box selections. Loved Nelson's for some great food in casual atmosphere. Lobby bar was fun with great jazz group on Saturday night. Staff is warm, welcoming and genuinely friendly. The selections on the Sunday brunch perfectly suited my palate. I will definitely return here again, and again. Next time I will take the time to fit in some golf.

Room Tip: I don't think you can go wrong with any room selection.

Going in and out of LAX is such an easy thing to do while staying here. I travel all over the country and this resort ranks in the top 5. No hotel is perfect but after three awesome days I just found it to be a very difficult chore to complain about anything. The view of the ocean and the sunsets are worth the price of a ticket here. The staff here go out of the way to make every minute of your stay excellent.

Room Tip: Don't stay in a room that doesn't offer an ocean view. That alone is worth the price of the...

First off, I didn't have to pay for this room, so I don't know about the value, but...what a beautiful place! Everything is first class, from the valet to the front desk to the room and especially the view. I certainly didn't feel like I was a few minutes from LA International Airport! I wish I would've had more than a day there. Give it a try!!

Enjoyed a very good dinner at Nelson's Sports bar. This is at the far side of the property overlooking the ocean and an enjoyable place for whale watching. Food was very good, serving size was more than adequate. Staff were attentive & friendly. Beautiful grounds and well kept. Prices were a little high, but that is to be expected considering the locale. Wouldn;t mind coming back to stay for a weekend.
