“Nice spot in the desert”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Was initially disappointed. Despite my reservation saying "resort view" which I believe means near a pool I was assigned a "golf course" view room. Further it was on the first floor and I have visions of running feet overhead. The clerk advised that they were full and that there was nothing she could do. She did however acknowledge my SPG platinum status and gave me continental breakfast coupons. They later sent over a bottle of wine.

We arrived at our room and we pleased by the size and layout. We sat out on our little patio and enjoyed a glass of wine. Then the neighbors arrived. They were two adults and five children. I have no idea where they all slept. They enjoyed yelling and screaming outside our room in some south Asian language. Fortunately they left the next day. Some noise later on from above us but it was tolerable.

The Westin Heavenly bed was great. Room also has a panel that allows connection of PCs/Tablets to the TV. Also small fridge and safe.

The property itself is older but very well maintained by a small army of staff.

Some orange trees on the property and yes the oranges are edible.

Fitness center had 2 striders, 3 bikes, 1 stepper, six treadmill, free weights and some machines. All new and well maintained. Arguably a small facility for the size of the property.

Putting green, bocce court, shuffleboard by buildings 15 and 16. Also tennis facilities in this area.

3 pools. The adult pool by buildings 3, 4 and 5, the main pool by the lobby and building 6 and the third pool by buildings 9, 10, 12 and 13. There are 16 buildings so if you want easy access to a pool pick one of the buildings listed above. I believe buildings 5, 6, 9 and 12 are the best choices for pool access. Be aware though, you could end up with no view at all in some buildings.

Even numbered rooms are second level. Odd are first level. For instance room 1305 is in building 13 on the ground level.

I would stay here again.

I visit Rancho Mirage 5X per year (Elderly parent) and have used this hotel a few times when bringing my family along with me. Each and every time there is a problem.

Cons: The most recent stay was flawed by a dead animal (tail hanging down from air vent...they said gekko, We thought rodent), lack of heat for one night (fixed on second day). Maid service performed at 3:30pm. Desk personnel not readily available at odd hours (rang their bell 10X before giving up). Service at Restaurant inconsistent.

Pros: Nice room size, Great gym and other facilities were quite nice and well maintained. Staff, other than front-desk, very friendly and warm. Great Location.

Management ultimately bought us a lousy X-Mas am buffet breakfast for the dead animal appearance, but we thought they should have done a little more. B'fast in their regular restaurant, though pricey, was much better post X-Mas. Engineering staff was helpful, but clearly understaffed. Maid service was loud in the neighboring halls and not timely

Room Tip: Request a nearby building if you plan on using the gym, pool or golf courses.

Mission Hills Resort is an older property, but maintained extremely well. The location is great, with with many restaurants and stores near by. The rooms are very spacious. The only recommendation I would suggest is to improve the selection of cable shows, but who goes to Palm Springs for TV?
Overall it was a great experience and we will be back!

Room Tip: Select a room that has a great view of the mountains, golf course and beautiful water features. Thie...

The hotel is very nice. Too bad we weren't allowed to stay there. I tried to book several rooms
for my family, so they could be together over Christmas. Unfortunately, the hotel was apparently over-sold (though no one ever admitted this, the central reservations agent told me there was not a single room available.)

So they moved my 83-year-old uncle, who can barely walk, down to the Villas a short distance away. Despite repeated requests to get my whole family together, and despite the fact I had a written confirmation, no one would move him back to the hotel with the rest of the family. He has quite a few challenges, and has difficulty walking. Even so, they gave him a second floor room so he had to climb a flight of stairs.

As I said, the hotel itself is very nice. In fact, my wife and I lived in the hotel for over a year while we were waiting to purchase our first home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay back then. But now, the staff is obviously not as well- trained. They were pleasant enough, if not helpful.

The hotel property itself is very nice...and if you stay there, and are not bumped someplace else, you will probably be quite happy. But don't expect a lot of help from the management or staff if you have any sort of issue. We were more than a little disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask for something overlooking the golf course.

Housekeeping uses walkie talkies to communicate on full volume so you hear "I forgot coffe cups in room 1425" ant 8 am and the kids wake up crying after a late night that took us to the desert in the first place. If they try to book you in building #14 don't take the room. It is where they have the laundry for housekeeping. As a result, you are surrounded by housekeeping carts, bags of dirty laundry and trash and a lot of noise. It was horrible. We had ants in our bathroom and had to walk forever to the pool with the water slide. It was a huge disappointment and not at all worthy of the Westin name.

We were positively surprised by the size and layout of this resort. Our room was on the second floor of one of the hacienda style buildings - it was large, luxurious with all the expected "mod cons". The beds were really comfortable, helping to explain why we always overslept. We appreciated having Wi Fi, coffee making facilities, a small fridge and a large, flat screen TV. The en-suite facilities were also generous. We felt very comfortable during our stay and didn't want to leave.. Indeed our request for a late check out was granted with no fuss at all - much appreciated!!! We'll be back one of these days even though we live on the other side of the world.
The main pool with slide was relatively small given the number of guests using it on the days we were there. Easy to make friends as we all thrashed about in the water together fighting for space. The lighting around this pool in the evening was sparse (to say the least) and we were bemused to see the pool staff clearing up by torch light... The hike to the pool each day from our room ensured that we needed a rest and cool off when we got there (temperatures in excess of 100° Fahrenheit outside). We could have hitched a ride on one of the golf buggies touring the resort but they were not always close at hand. I hate the extra resort fee policy & I would prefer to see all costs in the basic room price at the time of booking PLEASE!!

The public areas are not accessible to anyone unable to open a heavy narrow door, or someone in a wheelchair or scooter. I was told that there are only 2 rooms (of 500) with roll-in showers. This hotel is spread out over vast distances that are hinderances to the handicapped. The beds are very high and difficult for a handicapped person to get into. I think the bathroom sinks would be difficult for a wheelchair guest to use. The doors to the rooms are heavy and were difficult to manage with a scooter to keep them open to enter or leave. I was not given a room with a roll in shower as promised 3 days prior to arrival
