“Absolutely fantastic place. Would return in a heartbeat!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2010

My family just returned from a week stay here. We loved it. Everywhere you look its beautiful...flowers, golf greens, buildings, just a lovely paradise. We had a gorgeous, spacious room overlooking the golf course. It was super quiet and just a short walk to everything. In the mornings and afternoons, being that our room was on the ground floor we'd walk outside off our porch into the grassy area and play soccer, frisbee or read. Nice to have a room with an option like that. We played golf (very reasonably priced for families), tennis and of course swam a lot. The only drawback of this place for us was the craziness of Splashtopia -- super tough to find a chair although the staff were so helpful if they saw you standing there looking around with a towel in hand. My preteen kids have outgrown the chaos & noise that goes with 1000's of little ones so although we spent one day hanging there, we discovered a quiet pool right next to the tennis courts that was more our family's style. It had a deep end and was quiet. My kids usually had the place to themselves. (No lifeguards though). The adult tranquility pool was fantastic too, but you had to be 18 to be in there. The staff were absolutely top notch and they were everywhere. ANY problem, and they were solving it immediately. In the evenings, there are live singers/bands at the firepit area outside of the BluEmber restaurant. Families hung out together, little ones running about between the organized events for them as parents relaxed and sometimes even dancing under the stars. It was a lovely, safe and happy place to be.

If you don't have children who love pools....you probably can find a better match elsewhere, although the beautiful thing about this charming & beautifully landscaped tennis/golf/spa/pool/restaurant resort is that there is an ADULTS ONLY POOL!!! Which is nicely appointed and located and a haven for those who don't want to be near childrn....yet it is also a tremendous benefit to those who do have children and are worried that there 10 year old, who is just jumping into the pool being a kid, is going to splash the lovely 28 year old woman who is carefully keeping mostly dry while reading a novel while standing in the pool or the 70 year old gentleman who is sitting on the edge of the pool. Happily for them, and for responsible parents, the adult only pool protects adults from the naturally rambunctious energy of kids when they get around water, and protects vigilant parents from having to try to remind thir chldren to be careful of not splashing adults....and I bet the kids are quite happy to be free of those reminders, too.

This hotel is, to my family, primarily a water park with lodging. :) My children are now probably so spoiled by the pool extravaganza at Rancho Las Palmas that they will probably consider every other pool they every view as to be inadequate! There are 2 water slides, there is one very large pool, about 3 1/2 feet deep everywhere, there is a little sand beach for the under 3 year old set who wants to dig in the sand, and then they just wade into a tiny pool if they wish...and then there is the lazy river, a water way that has inflatable "donut" floating on it and a mild current to move you along. Kids, adults, grandparents, newlyweds, everyone goes on the lazy river. There are lifeguards...attentive ones...all along the meandering river to make sure things go smoothly (read: make sure preteens don't start tipping each other's donuts over and creating a log jam), there are lifeguards at the pool, and at the waterslide, and toddler's area. My daughter does not swim well, and yet I was at ease, due to the lifeguards everywhere, as well as the depth of the water (3.5 feet or so) and the hotel even provided a life vest for her, mostly for her own confidence. The pool was sparklingly clean, fenced in everywhere, children under 10 could in no way wander away. It was the first time my 10 year olds were out of my sight at a pool. My son was in the water for 5 hours straight. My daughter stopped for lunch (kids menu ordered from a grill, waiter brings food to you, and although the room charge for us was a real splurge, I thought the lunches at the pool were very reasonable for what came with them). There is no nickle & diming like at Disney resorts, where you pay for your inflatable donut...by the 1/2 hour. You are able to bring your own inflatables from home if you wish (we did), pool toys, etc, but there is also a little shop that sells that 7 foot inflatable alligator that your child always wished for so he/she and the 3 kids he/she just met will have the adventure of trying to climb on it and fall off it for the next 1 1/2 hours.

Our room was lovely, well decorated and stocked. No refrigerator (unless you ask & then a charge). We actually went to Walmart (2miles away) and bought a styrofoam cooler for milk, yogurt, fruit, in our room. Breakfast is nice, but was too expensive for our budget $25 for an adult, child eats free---we went to Denny's 2 miles away, but splurged one day on the resort breakfast. There are only 2 negative things
1. a very well publicized $25/day resort fee...but this is really just an add on---the explanation is that it is for local calls, a newspaper, and and wireless in the room----wireless was great....but I can get that many places with no additional charge. It was well explained on the website, and inperson---it's just seemed niggling.

2. the rooms offer either a double bed or a king with pull out couch. I thought it was not so great to have my kids sleep on a pull out couch, so chose the Double/Double. I don't know how many couples today sleep on double beds, but I can now say, we will probably never be a couple that sleeps in a double bed again. REally--- a double bed? Every budget hotel offers you a Queen/Queen...so I wish that were an option here. If you go, be an informed bed chooser!

We reallly, really loved our experience. Take a look at some of the tripadvisor guest pictures, they seem to offer better pictures of just how amazing the pool area is....if I were the hotel I would show a lot more photos of it on the website.
If we could afford to go again and again and again....we would!!!
(2 children both 10 years old & 2 adults)
Enjoy!!!!

First, don't go during spring break. Although we loved this hotel we didn't like all the people and kids at the main pool. Even though our kids are 14 and 10 they had a hard time with the crowds. Other than that we enjoyed our stay. Grounds were beautiful and well maintained. Staff very friendly and attentive. Our favorite part of the trip was having dinner outside and listening to live music at the main restaurant Blu Ember.

We recently spent a very disappointing four nights at Rancho Las Palmas. One big problem was the staff which seemed poorly trained, inexperienced and generally unhelpful from the front desk personnel to the staff in the one restaurant which, by the way, was inadequate to serve the needs of the guests. In four days, only once was someone at the concierge desk. The whole resort seemed overrun with children. We were supposed to be on a golf/spa package. When circumstances called for a change of plans, we were charged for these services although we had canceled them well in advance. They also had us booked for a tennis outing which we had never signed up for. The one hundred dollar "resort credit" we were supposed to receive turned out to be bogus and of course, no one could explain the disparity to us. As a final insult, while trying to check out, a group of young men were permitted to cut in front of people who had been waiting in line for up to fifteen minutes, another demonstration of the useless front desk staff. Just to show I'm not just a chronic complainer, on the same trip we also spent four nights at the Westin Mission Hills Resort where our experience was just the opposite. Beautiful setting, great restaurant and a friendly knowledgeable staff. We did the same activities at Westin and our total bill was $600 less than at Rancho.

We stayed here for four nights and overall we enjoyed our stay here despite the issues we had at check-in. I was hesitant to stay at this hotel because I felt that Splashtopia would make this hotel property full of kids. My husband and I were looking for a relaxing get away and don't have any children therefore didn't want to be surrounded by them while trying to relax. This is specifically why we reserved a Plaza room which is on the complete opposite side as Splashtopia near the adults only tranquil pool.

Upon check in they told us our room had been "upgraded": to a pool view room. You got it, a Splashtopia pool view room. We under no circumstances wanted a room in that area -- pool area opens early and stays open until 10pm. After much battling and the front desk telling us that was all they had they stated they had found a room for us. Once we got to the room we realized it was the one room (second floor) that was exactly on top of Kidtopia (a day camp on the first floor). Phone call back to the front desk where we were told that was our only option. After much haggling, other rooms miraculously became available. We were able to get a room that was still near Splashtopia and not a plaza room as reserved, but it wasn't directly overlooking it so we settled. (I should note they did waive the daily $25 fee for our troubles.)

After check in drama we went to walk around the property and for some reason a ton of lights were on in unoccupied rooms. Yes, unoccupied rooms away from Splashtopia. I don't understand why one of those weren't available to us or why the front desk claimed nothing else was available when I saw at least 20 unoccupied available rooms. Anyway, moving on...

The rest of our stay was great. The BluEmber is a great place to grab a drink near the fire (we never ate here) and the adult pool, while very small is quiet and relaxing. Although they could use more staff serving food and drink poolside. There was only one waiter serving and on the weekend that was just not enough -- I felt bad, you could tell the guy was totally overwhelmed. The location of the hotel is perfect -- across from The River where there are lots of restaurants and some shops.

I wouldn't be opposed to staying here again, but I would probably check out a property a little less kid oriented first. Enjoyable stay overall, minus the check in process.

Oh,Concierge was great and very helpful!

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. We’re sorry that your check-in experience did not meet your expectations, but we’re glad that you enjoyed the rest of your stay at Rancho as well as the location across from The River. We really went to this hotel to meet as 3 friends, go to the spa, and lay out at the pool for some r&r. For those reasons, it definitely fit the bill. We hung out over in the adult pool area which was much smaller, but away from the noise of Splashtopia (although it did not have as consistent of sun coverage over there). There is another large pool next to Splashtopia, so we never had issues finding sun space and chairs.

Our room had a view of the golf course, so it was very quiet. We did leave the screen door open, and there were several bugs in our room which was not ideal. We requested a room with 2 beds, and typically those are queens - we got doubles, and since we had 3 people we had to pay for a rollaway bed. Again, not ideal. Overall the beds were comfy, and the rooms were clean and well appointed.

We had the brunch buffet at Blue Ember on the grounds, and although it was a bit pricey we were pleased with the quality of the food - tons of fresh fruit, an omlette station that included egg white omlettes, etc. Most people in our party went to the spa for facials and massages, and that got rave reviews by all! The grounds are really well maintained, and it is relaxing to just walk around and enjoy the trees and flowers.

We were able to walk across the street for a little shopping and some restaurants at The River, but they were mostly chains (PF Chang, Cheesecake Factory, Yard House, etc). For nicer restaurants, it was a short 5-minute drive into Palm Desert. The concierge was super helpful for making dinner recommendations!

Would stay here again...the golf course looked great, so we may try that nex time...

we booked through expedia so didn't expect any upgrades or great rooms which is usually the case if booked with a travel sight. we first got room 920 with 2 dblb beds and in a good location , close proximity to lobby, blue ember, splashtopia and fitness room; however the room had a very loud air conditioning unit. whenever it's on, it was a loud roar so we had to turn it off and use the ceiling fan and open the balcony door for fresh air. upon checking into 920, the balcony was a plus but ours looked directly into a huge lemon tree with a glimpse of the fairway greens. if you like shade, then it was perfect, but for us, we would have preferred some sun but the lemon tree blocked everything. there was only 1 bar of soap in the washroom so we had to share it between the sink and the shower....needed better housekeeping inspection. in addition, my husband didn't want to tell me until later that he found a few ants upon checking in.

the next day i had to see the front desk about changing rooms because of the noisy air con unit, the double bed is really too small for 2 large adults, the ants, and the lemon tree view from balcony. luckily and very grateful to front desk, arnoldo, who actually cared and tried to accomodate a room change and suggested 2524. after checking it out, i realized that it also had a huge tree infront of the balcony so he was kind enough to put us in 2527. the room has a king bed with pull out sofa and a balcony with 100% fairway green view. the air con unit is also not loud, but upon checking in, we noticed there was no room safe and the sofa bed had no sheets. we called down and maintenance did come with a new safe to install but it took a long time ! luckily, we weren't in a rush.
housekeeping also came with sheets for the sofa bed but that also took a few calls for reminders.
all in all, everything did get resolved and we are enjoying our stay. splashtopia and the pools are all very clean and well maintained. if you have young children, this is the hotel for you because of the pool and slides/lazy river.

the blue ember restaurant is very nice in the evening with live music and the ambiance is very good. fire pits were lit, people were outdoors eating and drinking , great atmosphere.

the hotel is in a super location, across from a complex called the river, with many great restaurants like cheesecake factory, pf changs, fleming steakhouse, the yard house, and many small eateries. it is also a 2 min drive to vons and mcdonalds if you need anything for the children.

i would recommend this resort and i would probably not pay more than $200 night because there is a resort charge of $25 /day. we loved our balcony the most and that is a definite plus.
