“Sit outside and save”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

We sat on the porch and it was excellent. The service was great and the food first rate. If you sit inside the prices are more and it is more conducive to a larger gathering. If you have three of four in the family the outdoor seating is fine. The prices are a bit dear inside. Parking is easy, but if you are exiting east on Foothill make sure your vehicle hits the inground magnetic strip that trips the traffic light to your presence. Overall, a nice place to visit. It is too bad that they don't offer more about the history of the place on the tables as it takes a fair amount of time for the food to arrive. A good place for a special event, or just to take a step-up from the usual fare.

“Poor value for tradition”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

The building is great but I am surprised they can rest on their slab of beef on a plate and old fashioned red chair laurels. We thought it was poor value for the money. And we live in San Francisco and travel and eat out all the time.
The steak and salmon were acceptable---but they really can't put a vegetable or even some reasonably attractive garnish on the plates?
The quantity and friendliness of the staff was good but they didn't seem to be particularly efficient or around when we wanted them. Perhaps because we weren't ordering a large amount or the high-priced wine.
Their wine list is excellent but could be more variably priced--there are plenty of wines that would appeal to a broader audience. And why do they bother to bring a little glass carafe to the table--why not just the glass, or far preferably and far more common now, the bottle of wine they have poured from?

“Excellent Steakhouse”
Reviewed December 21, 2013

We were on our way on route 66 from Chicago IL to LA CA. It was my wife´s birthday and we bumped into this nice place. We were treated very nice, the food was excellent and so was the wine, recommended by the waiter.

“Classic Place but Overpriced for Average Tasting Food”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

The place was a bit musty upon entering. Got seated in a corner in the back rather than the middle. The chairs were old but cushioning was bumpy. Nicely decorated for holidays. Had been here before on my birthday so this place was my wish and was expecting the best tasting food, especially considering the prices on the menu. Received no before dinner bread. The waiter was ok and cordial.
When the food came, my wife and I were disappointed. It was average. The prime rib was average. Not the $39 it was priced for. My wife's salmon was very dry and not too tasty. The brussel sprouts were hard and tasteless. My wife told the waiter it was my birthday, but he didn't come back with the special desert I was waiting for. We gave him a good tip too. But, oh well. Will not come here unless the word spreads that their food is better and they freshen up the inside.

“It Has Been Around since 1848 for a Reason!”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

This is our favorite restaurant in the area. We like it so much we rented the entire restaurant for our wedding reception! Everything is good! We always start with the spinach salad (awesome warm bacon dressing!) and end with the Grand Marnier Souffle (have to order it early in the meal because it is so good it takes time to create!). When we win the lottery we will go here every night for dinner!
