“Yes you should stay here.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Coast Guard House for the first time a few weeks ago and we were extremely impressed and happy with our stay. Everything about it was amazing and memorable; the views, the landscape, the house itself, our room, breakfast in the morning, and of course the innkeepers Mia and Kevin. We stayed in the flag room which is a quaint and cozy room that has an amazing ocean view. Our room and bathroom were spotless and the rest of the inn was very well kept and beautifully decorated. I loved how there were original fixtures and old photographs because it made us feel more connected to the history of the house. Mia prepared us a beautiful breakfast with tea, grapefruit (which was expertly cut), vegetable omelets, and homemade blueberry muffins. The Coast Guard House is something out of a dream and we can't wait to stay there again.

I spent a night at Coast Guard House in Sunrise room with my wife during our Californian roadtrip.

Inn is located within day's drive from San Francisco, good location especially if you've chosen scenic Pacific Coast Hwy 1.

Building itself is originally from the early 1900's. Nice and calm location with an ocean view.

There's only a few guest rooms, which makes accommodation quite unique and peaceful. Our Sunrise room was idyllic, cozy, tidy, warm and had some character as well as other house too. Bathroom was spacy enough and clean.

Breakfast at Coast Guard House was very delicious and rich. Inn keepers Mia and Kevin were also very friendly and helpful.

I'd say above average basic accommodation, but slightly pricy. However, all the B&Bs by the Highway One were as pricy.

Plus for quiet location, character, nice rooms and breakfast, minus for price/quality.

There is nice local restaurant by the pier in just a minute's walk from the house (superb local seafood).

I had a trip that was a mix of personal and business travel. I had to attend a funeral in Eureka and had a business meeting in Sacramento two days later. So I was looking for something at a midpoint along the coastal highway. What a fabulous place! Kevin and Mia are wonderful hosts. The trip through the mountain pass was tricky, but they had provided some directional guidance in advance which was very helpful. Upon arrival, Kevin and Mia came down to greet me and make sure everything was okay. I stayed in the Surfman Cove room, which had a beautiful Japanese soaking tub and a fireplace. The room and whole house decorating was very comfortable and quaint. I left the window open and there was a buoy bell way in the bay that clangs ever so lightly at night – it was very soothing. In the morning, Mia served us a quiche and fresh-fruit breakfast with wonderful flower decorations and great table conversation. There was only one other guest who left immediately after breakfast, so it gave me an opportunity to take pictures of all the rooms that I thought might be helpful to others. I could only post a few due to picture limit, but it will give you an idea of the look and feel. I also added three pictures of the property overall to give a flavor of the Inn and the Bay.

Overall, the area is very quaint and quiet. There is a nice restaurant/bar within walking distance down the hill as you go out to the pier. In town, there are many small shops and small, quality places to eat. The town sports all kinds of regular activities and special events to I would suggest checking first as to what is going on where so you can plan in advance what to do. Kevin and Mia both seem to know the town really well and can give you many tips and advice on the best places to go to eat out. But I was really looking for quiet time and it was absolutely there. That is what was nice to me – there are many things to do but if you want to do nothing, you can just relax and enjoy the quiet.

I really enjoyed their dog Winston, so make a point of meeting him while you are there if you love animals. He is the best!

Overall, A+++ on cleanliness, location and hospitality. I will definitely be back!!!

Room Tip: You will need to bok 2 nights for a weekend

Very quaint rooms and very clean. Hosts were helpful and nice, but didn't offer drinks or snacks upon arrival - just options of restaurants in the area.

PLEASE watch the billing!!! Prices online are misleading. Online prices reflect minimum 2 person occupancy apparently. Reserved for 4 through the website, were not given the option of identifying adults or children - quoted a higher balance through confirmation email to allow for the additional 2 people, which we accepted. Were then charged even more at checkout as we were told the higher quoted price was for 2 children, not adults. When we called back to question this, they argued the point and offered no compromise. Very disappointed with the customer service.

Clean place, but pay attention to your bill.

I put together a last-minute getaway to the coast and found the Coast Guard House on bedandbreakfast.com. Kevin was excellent in working with me and my schedule in order to accomodate us. Once we got to Point Arena we easily found the road that the B&B is on, but had a bit of trouble actually finding the house....you have to make a U-turn around a building and see the little sign. I recognized the roof from an online photo...and zero cellphone coverage here, so no GPS. We checked in via the red phone outside and Mia came right over with their dog Winston. She showed us our room and happily provided local info and hiking information. She also asked us if we had any breakfast restrictions and if she could make us dinner reservations. There is not much in and around Point Arena, but we brought our bikes and there was great hiking. We ventured around the lighthouse and Manhattan Beach. We also climbed down to many tide pools, which were really neat. We stayed in the Flag room, which was awesome! It is a lot smaller than your typical B&B room, but has a cool design. There are 3 tiers: the first is the entryway and bathroom. The second is where the very comfortable bed is, with windows at the head, south side, and foot for amazing views! The third is a tiny chart room with a chart table and bench with windows that let the ocean breeze and sound come in. The only thing of note on this room is that if you are looking for a spacious room, or one with an elegant bathroom with a big tub, you should choose a different one. For our one night stay, it was perfect! We had dinner right there at The Pier - Chowder House & Taproom...great beer and wine selections, window seating, friendly staff, but average food. Directly below them is Pizzas & Cream where we had lunch on our way out of town...extremely friendly staff and great pizza. Both of these are just down the driveway and across the parking lot from Coast Guard House. Our breakfast was not the filling breakfast we normally see at all of our B&B stays, but still delicious.

Stayed here for 1 night in May 2011. Beautiful location, friendly, practical down to earth B&B owners who are not in your face. Very comfortable, spacious room with lovely views. Near harbour and harbour restaurant (5 min walk). Massive "sunken tub" - not practical to use as it would take forever and a huge amount of water to fill. Nice, light breakfast. Would recommend.

My wife and I got away for a little "down" time on the NoCal Mendicino Coast - we picked
The Coast Guard House Inn as a lovely getaway on Route 1 tucked overlooking Point Arena Cove. The rooms are charmingly decorated in the style perfect to the history of the house - no frilly victorian prints here - and the beds are exceptionally comfortable. We've stayed in most of the rooms there and love the fact that you can lie in bed and hear only the harbor sounds. Its amazingly quiet at night. Equally amazing is the amount of stars you see in the night sky. We're used to "big" sky in the Sierras and were surprised to find the same here on the coast. We liked sitting at the window, enjoying a glass of wine and listening/watching the evening sky.
Breakfast is always scrumptious - Mia is an excellent cook - and the meals never dissappoint. Nor did I ever leave the table hungry as there is plenty what with the fruit, muffins, granola/yogurt, and the main dish. Everything is made from scratch and the consistently high quality is impressive.
The hosts Mia and Kevin make the place even more special: friendly, funny, smart, and accomodating, they are open with suggestions of where to go or info on area history. It is a real treat to engage in an after-breakfast conversation with them on a myriad of subjects. And we can't forget Winston the awesome dog who is always up for a scritch or a walk if you seem the obliging type. This place is a real find and we will be coming back soon!
